I bought the dispenser for use over 1 acre of land, and quite honestly, I became frustrated with the dispenser and used a clean pot with holes in the bottom instead. The tube was next to impossible to fill in any sort of appreciable time without spilling Milky Spore all over your hands. If you get this product, a funnel is a must!!! Next, the actual method dispensing took a long time. I would up spreading Milky Spore on the stems of plants, my shoes, and pants. Also, I did this in the morning and the dispenser is made of cardboard. After a while, dew would swell and damage the end of the applicator.

Overall, it's a good idea for applying the product, but save a few bucks and use household items instead.

Okay, if you want to spend $7 for a cardboard tube, go ahead. I did thinking there had to be a bit more to it.

It's messy, pain to fill this thing, the spore goes everywhere. When dispensing I quickly figured out there has to be a better way to get a more uniform spread.

I ended up mixing the milky spore in with some fertilizer and using my lawn spreader. Worked much better.

The first time I applied Milky Spore to my 7,000 sq ft lawn was 10 years ago with a teaspoon. It was back-breaking and exhausting. The product lasted for the guaranteed 10 years and I was thrilled with the results. It not only kept all larvae at bay, but also kept moles out of the yard. No food supply, no moles! I ordered the dispenser this time because I couldn't face the tedious prospect of applying it teaspoon by teaspoon again. But I'm a person who hesitates to use a product without a thorough understanding of how it works. Since the instruction for the Milky Spore Dispenser were so limited I went to this website to read reviews, knowing that previous users would be sharing their successes and pitfalls. After reviewing the many pitfalls so many users experienced as well as the reasons people who succeeded did succeed, I came up with a plan that worked GREAT for me and I'd like to share it. And this was with the unlined inside, plain cardboard dispenser. First - Reinforcing the Dispenser End: I used 4 pieces of duck tape to fasten the plastic dispenser at the end of the tube to the outside of the cardboard tube by running a very narrow edge of each piece of tape length-wise along the outside edge of the plastic piece (making sure not to cover up the part of the plastic where you open and close the hole). Then I folded it up over the tube so that the 4 pieces formed a square edge around the plastic piece. That reinforced the tube, keeping it dry and keeping the plastic piece from popping off. Second - Filling the Dispenser: I laid a plastic garbage bag (kitchen size)flat on the ground to catch any wayward powder. Then I sat in a lawn chair beside the plastic and held the dispenser tube between my legs, out over the plastic.Read more ›

OK, I'm a gardener and have, for years, spread milky spore by hand for all my clients. I recently watched a video on the "ease of use" of the milky spore dispenser and thought it would be just the bees' knees'; easy to use, just tap on the ground...and the gal in the video looked sooooo cool, walking and tapping! I rushed to my local farm supply and bought one to dispense two 40 0z. containers of milky spore. (that's a LOT of milky spore, folks!)

Since the spore instructions say the ground should be wet when you apply and that it should be watered in for at least 15 minutes after application, I've always waited for a nice soft rain and tip-toed through the process using a plastic quart container with a top that I cut a hole in on one edge just big enough to insert my long-handled teaspoon measure. It kept the spore dry. This method always works well, but is a bit messy. (don't try on a windy day!)

So, back to the dispenser...the thing is a real pain to load....but I managed (took me several minutes)inserted the top, opened the dispenser bottom and with the first "tap", nothing happened...so I tapped it a bit harder....1/3 of the entire dispenser load flew out the bottom, taking the little insert with it. Through sheer determination, I managed to salvage most the the spill, and dissolved it in water in my 3 gallon watering can...got that much "dispensed". Then I emptied the remaining spore still in the dispenser into my old quart container and finished the job.

And then, it occurred to me that the lady in the video was tapping on a dry lawn...and that a wet lawn would surely clog the little holes that the spore it to be dispensed through in a very few taps. DUH.

I have rarely felt better throwing a piece of trash away then I did when I JAMMED THAT DISPENSER IN THE GARBAGE CAN! Save your money!

This product looks like all the rest but is far from it. The tube is normal cardboard so the product "sticks" to the inside of the tube, it doesn't slide out nicely for despensing.(others I have seen since have a silver coating inside the cardboard to make the product slide out with out any problem) When dispensing you must shake it very hard to get any thing to come out. Because of this trying to get the correct amount to come out the bottom is very difficult, you never know how far you should open the slider on the bottom for distribution. You "cannot" fill the tube to the top with product as this only magnitude the problem of dispensing. I borrowed one from my sister so that my daughter and I could do the lawn at the same time. The difference between the two dispensers was unbelievable. Her's was silver coated inside and the product dispensed extremely well. She found hers in a local store and paid about half the price for it..... and it was a better product. I would not reccomend this particular product from this web site store to anyone.
