Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Samsung Camera announces the introduction of the new Digimax L60. Part of the Prestige line featuring sleek designs and user-friendly advanced features, the L60 features a 3x optical zoom SHD lens, 5x digital zoom, and a large 2.4-inch color LCD display. The Prestige line is perfect for the step-up user who desires high-quality optics but with easy to use features and a sleek, ergonomic body design with features such as MPEG-4 video recording in a compact package.

The Digimax L60 offers MPEG-4, the high-compression, high quality video format that can record for up to 3-4 times longer than traditional video formats commonly used in other digital cameras. The L60 can record in VGA (640 x 480) at 30 frames per second, for smoother video and a bigger view of the movie on LCD and TV screens. For steady recording, the built-in movie stabilization will automatically detect and correct lateral and vertical camera movement caused by the shooter's unsteady hand. Users can also take advantage of the camera's unique movie shooting functions, including a movie stabilizer, continuous video recording, improved in-camera video editing, and the ability to use the 3x optical zoom while recording. Movie stabilizer helps reduce camera shake by automatic detection and correction of lateral and vertical camera vibrations, while continuous video recording allows the shooter to pause and resume video recording at any time and merge multiple video files into one single file. Users can also save a selected part of a movie clip into a new file during playback and capture a still image during video playback.

The L60 features several special effects functions for creative control in-camera, such as Color Effect, Highlight, Photo Frame, Negative, and Composite Shot. Color effects include black and white, sepia, blue, green, and red. For shooting fast-moving subjects, the L60 includes Continuous Shooting mode and Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB), a feature that will shoot a series of images with slightly varying exposures.

For crystal-clear images under various shooting conditions, the Digimax L60 features 11 scene modes including Night, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach and Snow, and Text Recognition. Text Recognition, a feature unique to Samsung digital still cameras, allows users to shoot documents such as books, papers and magazines and then extract text from the image taken using the bundled Digimax Reader text recognition software.

All Samsung digital still cameras feature a built-in image editing function allowing users to edit a variety of images without the use of a PC. The Trimming function can be used to cut an undesired part of an image and save only the required part. When short of memory, shooters can use the Resizing function to recover some of the memory space by resizing and saving images in a smaller size. The Rotating function allows users to rotate an image in the desired direction and save it.

To ensure the clarity of images regardless of shooting range, the Auto Macro function automatically adjusts shooting distance and focus. By using the macro button, users can set the camera to automatically adjust distance and focus from between 5 centimeters to infinity.

Equipped with 32 MB of built-in memory, the L60 allows shooters to save pictures without a memory card, while the Copy to Card function allows users to seamlessly transfer images saved in the internal memory to external memory. The L60 allows includes helpful features such as voice recording for up to one-hour, voice memo, and One-touch Playback for instant playback of an image, even when the power is off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid ultra-compact camera, best-in-class for it's price, August 23, 2006
By Steve Smart (New York) - See all my reviews
I took a chance on this little camera after reading reviews on CNET and at Steve's Digicams. It is every bit as good as the Canon Digital Elph I had previously (the Canon died of the E18 error), but almost 100 dollars cheaper.

The photo quality between the two cameras is a draw. In some situations the Samsung performs better, in others the Canon wins out. The overall differences are marginal.

Where the Samsung excels over the Canon is in it's MPEG4 video cabability. Using a 1GB card you can get 48 minutes of video at 640x480 resolution at 30 frames per second (1.5 hours at 15 FPS). You can even cut footage inside the camera (though it's a bit awkward). That said, the video is of the same grainy, highly compressed quality you get with your standard digital camera. You wouldn't use it to record a wedding, but still, it's a fun diversion that's well implemented.

I was also surprised at the battery life I've been getting (when freshly pulled off the charger). I charged the batteries before a 3-day hiking trip and came back with over 200 photos and 10 minutes of video - and the camera still had plenty of juice in it for another 40 photos a few days later (I was too lazy to charge it when I got back). Most of these were outdoor photos, so there wasn't much flash usage. Still, that's 240 photos plus 10 minutes of video, plus enough juice to download all of it to my computer. I've never had it die on my during use.

In either case, it's tough to go wrong with this camera for only 180 bucks or so. I carry it in my pocket or backpack most everywhere I go. I sewed a piece of fabric into a sleeve to keep the screen from being scratched while in my pocket. That's the only case I've needed for it and I like that it doesn't add any bulk to the camera's slim profile.

For those wondering about the size of the camera, it is similar in thinness to the the Canon Digital Elph series of cameras but slightly longer in it's longest dimension. Overall the slim design (0.8 inches) is very easy to slip into my jeans pocket.

**** RESPONSE TO THE FEW NEGATIVE REVIEWS ****
I completely agree that the "pre-flash" (the auto-focus assist lamp) slows down photo taking. Also, in dark situations, people will sometimes see the red assist lamp turn on, think it was the flash, and start to move before the real flash kicks in. I sometimes have to tell people to "wait for the second flash!"). However, this handy feature does allow the camera to do an admirable job of focusing in low light conditions - even complete darkness. And to be fair, my Canon Digital Elph did the SAME THING with its AF assist lamp (and likewise did an admirable job of focusing in low light.) I agree that it should be easier to turn off the AF assist lamp without turning off the flash.

At the end of the day, this camera still holds it's own against ultra-compact cameras costing 250+ dollars, which makes it a solid buy. It has all of the advantages (and disadvantages) of other ultra-compact cameras. You need to decide if you can live with the compromises of an ultra-compact camera in return for the high-portability.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sleeper Among Digicams!, October 10, 2006
By phillydenizen "PM" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
I must agree with the first reviewer, Steve Smart. This is really a sleeper of a cam about which few know or to which fewer still pay any serious attention. No, it's not a branded big name, but Samsung is gradually making their name heard in the digicam world with their most recent offerings, stylistic, and very functional designs.

Instead of burdening the user with a myriad of features which one will rarely use, Samsung provides a basic, well-conceived and executed little gem with the L60. It has everything one really needs and more. The photos are usually well-exposed with very good contrast, sharpness, and detail for a 6MP cam negating the need for a lot of post-processing. Small enough to stick into your jeans pocket and carry and use unobtrusively.

I'm giving this cam 5 stars based on its price point, substantial but not overwhelming feature set, good battery life, quality and apparent durability and, oh yes, those surprisingly good pics that come out of it!

4.0 out of 5 stars feature loaded in a small size, January 23, 2007
By Ramad Ash (Iowa City,IA) - See all my reviews
This is the 3rd digital camera I use, and it really is impressive. Here are the highlights:
-First off I LOVED the Video Feature, you get a decent 640X480 with SOUND, and since the camera is so small , you'll always be able to capture those special moments, it also comes with a USB cable to connect to the PC and a cable to connect the camera to a T.V (has video and audio out)
-The rechargable LiOn Battery that also comes with a charger is a very nice feature, digital cameras are notrious battery drainers, I had a separate budget for Batteries (AA) for my former camera, and those aint cheap!- so you wont worry about this with this one.
-it also has a voice recorder so you can record notes when you are taking still photos.

on the negative sides:
- you need to buy a separate SD memory because the high resolution stills and the videos take a lot of memory, you'll need AT LEAST 512MB, better yet go for the 1GB.
-The special effects button on the back of the camera is kinda useless, It can turn the pictures into monochrome, B/W. sepia etc. or negative,
_ the biggest negative thing I found is it takes way too long to actually capture the picture even on the low res. the flash goes on twice for red eye reduction( very impressive results) but the whole process is slooow, so you end up not taking the shot you intended , I am still trying to figure out how to disable this feature so it takes photos faster.
this may be the only real negative feature of this camera.
