This Chanter has kept me interested and enjoying every minute of learning to play it. The Chanter it self is beutiful. It is quite enough to practice without annoying the others. The book is basic and easy to follow. And I think the sound is soothing ( the reason I want to learn the bagpipes). I never learned to read music and this kit has taught me what I need to know. I am having alot of fun with it.

With that being said I feel like I can clear up the wide range of high and low ratings. If you are someone that has been playing music and know what to listen for. Or if your someone who thinks that they can pick up the chanter and be fairly good at it from the get go. Then this kit is probably not for you. I feel this kit is for someone who was ben thinking about playing the bagpipes and would like to give it a shot before investing in the much pricier options. For under $40, I will not feel bad if I play it for awhile, decide I dont like it then pass it off. I feel like a lot of the bad reviews are coming from people who have been involved with music for awhile and are buying it for what it is not. It is not a Chanter that the best pipers in the world will be picking up and playing. It is for a beginner with little to no musical training.

So in short I recomend it to a beginner with no musical background, or to someone who wants to try it before becoming commited to it. My kit sounds great, plays great and the kit is easy to follow. Thats all I could ask for because I dont know any better. The ear is something that develops over time, and if I reach that level then I will most likely buy a nicer Chanter.

I purchased this chanter nearly three weeks ago. I have used it roughly an hour or two everyday. The product is attractive and well made. I've heard that people have had issues with the wooden chanters being out of tune- I have had no such issue. I have had difficulty separating the chanter after use. I looked to adjust the reed, and the strings holding the piece together came apart requiring me to purchase another reed. Aside from this mishap I have been quite pleased with the product and the accompanying material.

I found the practice chanter hard to blow and difficult to separate. It looked better than it sounded. However the book and CD were helpful and easy to understand.

The practice chanter I received is out of tune past C and is cheaply made. The original reed did not function correctly and completely disintegrated upon removal. After purchasing and installing a quality Gibson reed the chanter is playable, but as I said, out of tune.

The included book an CD are not bad and fairly helpful.

I think most people would be better off saving up and purchasing a decent instrument from a recognized manufacturer (Dunbar, Gibson, etc.).

I wrote this review a year ago "This is an unexpensive practice chanter and the sound is not specially great, but it's enough for a good start. I live in Costa Rica and, as you should've guess, it's impossible to find a bagpipe teacher in this country, but this product gave me the basic knowledge I needed to star learning to play."

I had to change my mind!!

At first I was having fun playing this thing but, when I started to play a little more seriously, I realized that this is not a good instrument if you really want to learn to play the bagpipes, it's samaller than the regular chanter and the quality of the sound is poor. I bought a Gibson long practice chanter for about 90 bucks and my playing skills realy improved.

I would say that this chanter is pretty decent. The only thing that I would say is not great about it is the amount of pressure/lung capacity needed to blow into the chanter and produce an appropriate sound. My father has a chanter that is much more quiet and requires much less effort blowing into it. But, despite that, I would definitely recommend it. I am just starting to learn how to play and this is great. If I hated it then I would not have spent that much money finding out. Now that I know I like it, I will learn what I can from this and then likely invest in something more expensive and better quality.

I was told by an established Piper to make sure I got plenty of practice with a chanter before I decided whether or not to start playing the pipes. For the cost, I would say that this is a good investment into learning to play the bagpipes. The reed that came with it is plastic and eventhough I was told not to use a plastic, but to use a cane reed instead, I can still produce the correct notes with this chanter. I am enjoying the experience so far and am looking forward to switching to bagpipes soon.

Item was a price of junk , novelty item at most. The finger holes were to small and weren't counter sunk... So byer be where it's a toy just give it to the kids to play with of break it up and start a fire with it... I would think that Amazon would not let this type of fraud and deception take place...
