Ok, this product became one of my favorite, but not for the original intended use. I wanted to clear coat some counter tops in my sailboat, and wanted some UV resistance because you know, it's a boat, in Florida. However, as a clear coat on a very light uniform plastic surface (doesn't absorb the product) it was impossible to get rid if very tiny, hard to see (but still there) brush strokes). Most of the time the brush strokes weren't visible, but depending on the light, they would appear and I didn't like that.
HOWEVER: I then tried the product on wood, and there was not the slightest brush stroke. PERFECT. Also, I love that it is indeed crystal clear and doesn't alter the color of the wood. I ended up using it on my teak and holly sole inside the boat, despite the fact that it is not recommended for flooring, for several reasons:
- it is VERY EASY to apply.
- it dries INSANELY FAST, at least in Florida. I could re-coat every 5 minutes.
- no sanding required
- doesn't alter the color of the wood, but beautifully enhances the grain (like when the wood is wet).
- seals the wood / waterproofs the wood
- doesn't yellow the holly wood (originally white) like teak oil or varnish or other clear coat would.

The result is fantastic, took me less than 1 hour for a 30 foot boat, and can be redone anytime easily and quickly if needed. So who cares if it doesn't last 10 years, it is cheap, fast, easy, looks great, and requires no maintenance, no sanding, no mess when re-applying in the future, while protecting my teak&holly sole well. I highly recommend this to any boater who doesn't want to spend a week on varnishing or coating the sole and wants an easy 100% guaranteed perfect result (no strokes, no bubbles, no issues, apply right off the can as you want with a foam brush you CANT GET IT WRONG. LOVE IT.

I used this product on my outdoor stone lanai patio to seal it. I put three coats down, rolling each coat after letting it dry the suggested drying time. I live in Florida, and it has held up very well in the sun. It is basically indestructable. I put one of the coats on apparently before the morning moisture had burned off, and after about three months some black mildew showed up, UNDER the Varathane, on a few of the stones. I used the very best stripper I could find, but then finally had to use a 3500 PSI washer to get the varathane off, in combination with the stripper. This is a great product, and it is a water base.

I've been using spar varnish for a long time on my marine goods, but I started making other items. It was slightly too thick and not friendly for what I needed it for so I decided to try spar urethane.

Though it requires multiple coats depending on what you intend the finish to be, it's absolutely phenomenal. I found that four or five coats equaled the gloss finish of spar varnish, but was so much more pleasing of a texture. Equally weather resistant and durable.

The only "downside" vs. spar varnish is that spar varnish INSTANTLY "enhances" the color/grain of the wood you're applying it to.

I picked up Rust-Oleum Varathane 250241H 1-Quart Classic Clear Water Based Outdoor Spar Urethane, Semi Gloss Finish to add a protective finish and a little bit of sheen to a wood sign I made to hang on my back deck. For context, I made it by staining plywood with oil-based stain and then stenciled on lettering using a primer followed by a latex paint. (In hindsight, I should have used a water-based stain, but didn't quite plan ahead. Thankfully, all the online tutorials I read said as long as I waited a week or more before applying the water based spar urethane, I'd be fine.

This was wonderful to use. True to its marketing, it has very little odor. The directions suggested applying at least 4 coats, allowing for two hours of dry time in between. I also love that as long as you don't wait more than 24 hours between coats no sanding is necessary between coats. I didn't sand and had no issues with noticeable brush strokes. I found this very easy to apply with a synthetic brush.

And the results look great. The finish is exactly what I was going for - a slight gloss, but not a blinding sheen. I also appreciate that it didn't change the color of my art. Only time will tell how well it stands up to the elements, resisting UV rays, mold, etc. But I'm pretty optimistic based on the results so far.

Overall I really love this. It's really easy to work with and the results are great.

I know it's original use is for boats, but it's great for outside decor, too. I have used it on several yard sculptures to waterproof them. It's a bit thin, so I did use two coats on most stuff. I have covered a carousel sculpture ( combination metal and resin), other ceramic items, cast iron, and an aluminum, painted carousel horse. It goes on with a slight haze, which dries totally clear when it hardens. Easy to use, just water and soap, but will harden in a brush to the point the brush is ruined if not cleaned quickly. So it's deceptive. You think it won't harden enough, but it does. The water base poly will keep colours from fading and it really repels the water. It doesn't give you that yellowing that oil based poly does.

A quart goes a long way. Gives you a professional result. It deepens the colours of the item it's covering.
