1.0 out of 5 stars Great picture, even better idea, horrendous build and support, June 25, 2006

I received this product for Father's Day. Due to the small intenal memory (11 MB), I needed to load two or three of our 5 MP pictures at a time to allow the unit to automatically downsize them to the 780X440 pixel display size.

This worked fine, though was a bit annoying and necessary since my SD card didn't arrive with the unit, up to the (approximately) 20 picture mark. It was when I tried to load the last set of pictures that I had problems.

The unit usually took about 5 seconds per copy, but this time it lasted over an hour. I knew that something was probably wrong, but allowed it that much more time in case there was some slight glitch. After an hour, I reset the device manually.

From this time on, I've only been able to get the unit to show the boot screen (states "loading from" picture of memory card "(24)" for number of pictures). It will then go onto the intermediate screen with white background and a blue "Philips" . It will stay at that screen for hours (perhaps forever) if allowed to.

The until will no longer turn off without the hard reset. I called Philips customer service, but was told that I'd have to ship the until back AT MY COST for a replacement.

I find it unacceptable that a unit that is obviously defective out of the box is not covered IN FULL by the manufacturer. I've had other companies (Master Replicas in particular, but even Philips medical division) cover items with return shipping at their cost.

Stay away from this product. It would appear to be unstable, and there is no customer service given. For $250, you should be able to expect more.

What do you get someone who has everything? Something they don't necessarily want. I got this as a gift. Nice idea, it will cycle through pictures and remind me of who gave the frame to me. Here's the problem:

If you overload the memory, the machine freezes. Aparently there is a firmware update, but I found out too late. The frame will not boot any longer and wont mount on my computer. (part of the problem is that the manual to operate the frame comes on a CD, and the manual is NOT Mac compatible... surprize the manual is not a pdf file).

I had the same problem as the other reviewer, HOWEVER, I got better support. I got online, and their email and chat buttons were disabled, so I used their phone number I got from the web site. After navigating through the phone maze, I got a hold of a helpful agent. They are exchanging the frame. They are sending me a return box.
