A useful anthology of mostly minor but (with some exceptions) undeservedly neglected Mozart. Recordings of these works are hard to find "under one roof," so this issue has at least that advantage. Klien plays cleanly (pun intended), though not always with optimal charm. The sound is variable: warm and dry acoustics alternate distractingly. But the most serious deficiency is that there are no breaks between tracks, so that one piece in one style merges irritatingly into another piece in a totally different style. This should have been corrected--or did the producers not recognize the problem? Worthwhile for those seeking this repertoire in a bargain edition; but one can do better elsewhere (I remind my readers that Gieseking's classic EMI Mozart cycle, which includes the variations and shorter pieces, is still available).

ADDENDUM (2014): This was one of my first reviews for this website, and looking back, I think I may have been too critical of Klien's playing (though not of the deficiencies in the recording and presentation). In the intervening years I have listened with increasing appreciation to Klien's elegant Mozart Sonata cycle (one of the best, along with Uchida and Barenboim) and also to his terrific (though not terrifically recorded) Brahms cycle. Today I would be disposed to give this set of the Variations and Minor Pieces a higher rating. I also ordered a new copy of this set and so far, having auditioned a fair number of tracks, I do not detect the extreme variations of recording level of which I complained in my earlier review. The banding has also apparently been corrected, so that there is now a sufficient span of silence between tracks. So altogether I would now give this four an one-half stars rather than three. (JC)

I will start off by saying I am not familiar with any of these Mozart pieces, so there is little frame of reference like Mozart's well documented piano concertos or sonatas. However, ever since I received these discs along with Klien's Mozart Piano sonatas vols 1 and 2, I have not stopped listening to them.

Walter Klien's playing, filled with clarity and detail, suits these wonderful gems by Mozart perfectly. Elegant, vibrant, witty, somber, charming and joyful are all terms that come to mind as I listen to Klien emulate Mozart's natural skill on piano. Coming from the Viennese school, Klien was one of the 20th century's great Classical piano performers. His recordings of Mozart, Schubert and Brahms are all highly regarded.

I have listened to these discs on my home stereo through B&W speakers, my home computer, and my car stereo, and I am pleased with the sound quality. I am not hearing the great sound variations the previous reviewer heard, but I may not have the same critical ear or quality sound system.

The notes in the simple black and white booklet are interesting nuggets of information regarding each piece. Each CD is 79+ minutes long, so there is a lot of music packed on each disc.

There are two issues that I find disappointing about this product however. First, these discs are actually purple CDRs, not silver, factory pressed originals, even though nowhere in the product description does it say that. That point really irks me. Second and less so important to me, the Variations and other pieces are grouped together as single tracks. In other words, tracks such as "Eight Variations on a Dutch Song by Christian Ernst Graaf" are not indexed into 8 separate tracks, rather the Eight Variations are all one track.

Be it from their zodiac or happenstance itself, some individuals are entrusted with destiny. Walter Klien was one such person: he was born to play Mozart. Indeed, I cannot imagine him with any other composer. His armoury is complete: the rightness of touch, the regard for the vocal line in each work and the lucidity of his left hand. If the world had been better constituted, his concerts would have triggered a variant of Beatlemania.

Klien's survey of Mozart's Variations and miscellanea has been famous since the 1960s. It is one of the top ten recordings ever made, Mozart-wise. I can think of three other surveys off the top of my head - Haebler, Barenboim and Gieseking - and only the former runs him close (his greatness notwithstanding, Gieseking is slaughtered by the boxy EMI sound). Some of the music in this collection is gallant in the extreme: Klien imparts stature and profundity to it. Better still, Klien also includes a range of Klavierstucke and not merely the usual suspects; comparative rarities such as the Handelian Suite (K 399) the G Minor Fugue (K 401) and the Funeral March for Signor Maestro Contrapunto (K 453a) are included, the latter being yet another ex cathedra demonstration that no other composer can match Mozart in comedy. As Kierkegaard says, the gods champion laughter.

For those sleuths among us, apocryphal works such as the Sonata Movement and Minuet in B Flat (K. Anh 136) and the Allegro and Rondo in F (K. Anh 135) are also included; you decide if they're by Mozart or otherwise.

Recording-wise, the works were taped over time at different levels. In select instances, a firm finger on the volume-control is required. Some renditions are drier and less resplendent in the bass than others. In contrast, K 396 & K 573 are stellar.
