Editorial Reviews

Leonard Maltin

"I love it! An exceptional documentary."

Product Description

This one-hour documentary special is a film celebration of America's greatest icon of youth, freedom and the automobile. What began as an auto parts owner's business venture to make some easy money accidentally became a magical place where romance, fun and a sense of community flourished. This film chronicles the drive-in's birth and development, its phenomenal popularity with audiences of all ages, its tragic decline, and its inevitable comeback as a classic form of Americana.

Described by Variety as "slick and entertaining," DRIVE-IN MOVIE MEMORIES includes photos and footage from the mid-1930s until today, a powerful original music score, and lively interviews with such notables as Leonard Maltin, Barry Corbin, Burton Gilliam, Beverly Garland, Samuel Arkoff, and John Bloom (aka Joe Bob Briggs).

DRIVE-IN MOVIE MEMORIES covers every aspect of the drive-in movie-going experience: early outdoor projection, the marriage of the car and the movie, architects and drive-in construction, sound projection solutions, food trailers and concession stands, families and entertainment, teenagers and passion, church services, celebrity appearances, exploitation films, the effects of television and the VCR, and the drive-in's decline and comeback.

DRIVE-IN MOVIE MEMORIES was an Official Selection at both the Chicago International Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival, and won the Gold Award at the Houston World Fest. During its film festival tour, it played in over 40 festivals across the nation. DRIVE-IN MOVIE MEMORIES was produced by Don and Susan Sanders, and directed and edited by Kurt Kuenne, who also composed the musical score. The DVD includes such extra features as a twenty-minute reel of nostalgic concession stand advertisements.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing and nostalgic history of the Drive-In movie, June 7, 2006
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Drive-In Movie Memories is an informative and entertaining 58-minute documentary of the Drive-In Movie, a popular culture phenomena made possible by the combination of automobiles and the movies as a venue for youthful courting and family entertainment from its debut in the mid-1930's through it's "golden age" of the 1950s & 60s, to its decline with the competing onset of the television era and its diminished but still lingering presence on the American landscape of today. Featuring interviews with Burton Gilliam, Leonard Maltin, Samuel Arkoff, John Bloom, and Barry Corbin, Drive-In Movie Memories is a remarkable production of culturally significant American history. Enhanced with the inclusion of such special features as "About the Producers Awards & Festivals", "About the Director", and Don't Forget to Visit our Concession Stand!", Drive-In Movie Memories is enthusiastically recommended for personal and community library DVD collections as an intriguing and nostalgic history of the Drive-In movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars nostalgic memories and good time, grab some popcorn, March 19, 2009
I caught this documentary on PBS and happy to see it was available to purchase. This footage and information they have is very interesting and educational. Those of us who are fortunate to remember the drive ins will find this extremely nostalgic and fun. The next generation will find it very educational and probably feel jilted that they did not get to enjoy this great form of entertainment. I love how they show the history of how the drive in started and how this was a place to bring families in its heyday. I also loved how they showed "new advances" in sound systems, some of which were quite funny. It was great to see the "stars" of the drive in at it's heyday interviewed for this documentary, as well as the original movie trailers of drive in classics and as a special treat, there are concession stand ads there were used at the time of the drive in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drive ins will live in my heart forever, January 31, 2009
I enjoyed this DVD very much. I was a part of the drive in movie industry for over 20 years, and enjoyed every minute of it. This DVD was VERY good. It took me back to a much better time.
