Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Season Two of A Bit of Fry & Laurie opens with Stephen Fry dressed in a green velvet smoking jacket, dancercizing as he impersonates a quantity surveyor. You don't need to know what a quantity surveyor is to appreciate Fry and Laurie's humor; it's clearly another great chapter in British absurdity. They specialize in dizzying linguistic games: to protest censorship, they made up their own vicious swearwords (like "pimhole" and "pumpslider"). Deranged flights of self-absorbed literary criticism occur regularly. They satirize conservatism and commercialism (the second episode of this season was sponsored by a carpet manufacturer, whose product was worked into every sketch), but political commentary never takes priority over silliness. Castigating former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher swiftly turns to an angry song about jars that have lost their lids, which leads to an elegy to the recently deceased Hugh Laurie, who then takes part in his own eulogy. Familiar elements from the first season--artificial facial hair, non-sequitur quotes from people on the street, and the inexplicable doings of secret agent Tony Mercheson and his affable superior, Control--return in good form. Whether scolding their audience for laughing at alcoholism and genital fungus, demonstrating the right and wrong ways to greet trick-or-treaters, or impersonating Michael Jackson, Fry and Laurie proceed with earnest gravity and gracious smiles. Fans of their later careers in movies and American television (Laurie has achieved major stardom with House) owe it to themselves to check out Fry and Laurie's delightful comedy. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars Before there was Dr. House...., July 8, 2006
There was Hugh Laurie and his multi-talented pal Stephen Fry, doing the best sketch comedy the world has ever known. Laurie gets to sing & play the piano, Stephen mixes drinks, and the two of them write really funny sketches. A particular fave is the series of episodes with the overtly polite spies, Control and Tony, but it's hard to choose favorites, 'cause there's so much to dig.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, December 21, 2006
By Eddy (amazon.com) - See all my reviews
It must be said that 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie' did not suffer any drop off in quality after it's first series. In fact the opposite is the case, as it appears to have gained comic momentum in the intervening time.

The clever, rapier wit that is employed by the duo is still present, however now it has been further honed in. Fry and Laurie have now identified their social targets and are inent on pursuing them with renewed vigour. On the chopping block are the governing Conservative party of the time, as well as much of the middle/upper classes, specifically the obnoxious, mobile phone toting yuppies of London's banking and financial sector.

However this is not to say that the series takes on too serious a tone or is any way "preachy". The pair still find time to have fun with more traditional (and hilarious) sketch show characters and to indulge their comical whims. If you were a fan of the first series then you definitely won't go wrong with this DVD as it is certainly worth a decent chunk of anyone's money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Laurie Is Funny, January 9, 2007
For those people who only know Hugh Laurie as Dr. House, you will be deliighted to know he is truly a comic! He and Steven Frye will keep you in stitches for an hour in this series of comedy shows from the BBC. Inventive and wry, this is British humor (or humour) at its best.
