On the Buses is a really enjoyable, slightly saucy early 1970's Britcom which features an all around terrific cast. The series stars Reg Varney as Stan Butler, the driver of one of London's double-decker buses. Stan, though not exactly incompetent, is (together with his conductor Jack) far more interested in getting dates with the "clippies" (the nickname given to female conductors--they collect the fares from passengers). Living as he does with his doting and very protective (indeed, smothering!) mother, his sister Olive, and Olive's husband Arthur, Stan does not exactly have a home life that's conducive to a bachelor hoping to bring the odd date home. It is an arrangement, however, that allows for endless possibilities from a comic standpoint.

Stan's sister, Olive, is one of the dowdiest--nay homeliest--creatures, what with her thick unflattering eye-glasses, poker-straight hair which is often in curlers, and "sensible" clothing (imagine, if you can, something like a young Nora Batty in appearance!). With a whiny voice and a constant complaint of one sort or another, she's hardly the picture of robust health. Needless to say, she's the polar opposite of the perky, short-skirted clippies, and it is no surprise (at least not to the viewer) that her and Arthur's non-existent sex life is frequently the topic of conversation over meals.

But work itself is not exactly a cake-walk for Stan and Jack, what with their boss, the miserable, sour-faced, regimental bus inspector, Blakie, to contend with. This can pose a bit of a problem when it comes to chatting up the clippies or trying to take care of personal business with the use of the company's buses or facilities!

Great original comedy of Stan and his buddy Jack as driver and conductor of one of London's famous double decker buses. The program is in fact two situation comedies successfuly merged. One, a workplace comedy where free spirits Stan and Jack succeed in enjoying life despite the ridgid oppression of their ever present boss Blakey. The other is a British home situation comedy where Stan lives in cramped quarters with his dear old Mum and his myopic sister Olive and her sarcastic husband Arthur. Stan finds that his private life is often spilling over into his work life, to the ire of Blakey and the embarassment of Stan. Stan's good friend Jack is ever present though, to help him get through his troubles. The first season is in black and white and the rest is in colour. There are some episodes sadly missing due to their being thrown out by the BBC over the years. Genuinely funny, the program's appeal has survived the years and this collection is a worth while purchase.

On The Buses is a great early sitcom and the ultimate collection is a bargain compared to modern dvd sets.
The main characters are a bus driver in England, his family, and his co-workers.
We follow his antics as he gets himself into various funny situations in his home, at the bus depot,
and occasionally along the various bus routes that he drives. Although these episodes are approximately
half a century old the comedy has stood the test of time.

First saw this show on the BBC in Iceland. I love British humor. Even though it is from the 60s-70s (first episodes in black and white then goes to color in later episodes) it is still great to watch. I like a lot of the "older" television shows. Sure some of the more modern and newer shows are great too but its interesting to see what was popular 40-60 years ago. I am glad this show is on dvd so I can watch it whenever I want!

Right, let's get the bad bits out of the way first. On the Buses was a low budget sitcom, originally shown from 69 to 73. The plots were wafer thin ( if any plot to mention at all ), and the direction and acting were at least casual if not bad, but . . . they ( the producers and the cast ) got away with it. I am reviewing this now, purely because it is being shown again now on ITV, and I am nearly choking on my tea each night due to laughing at the same time.

The basics : Stan ( Reg Varney ) and Jack ( played by the tragic Bob Grant; the character was oddly called Arthur on occasions by Blakey ), are bus driver and conductor respectively. Stan is the eternal horny but frustrated bachelor, stuck at home with the fussy mother, the ( very ) plain Jane of a sister, Olive, and the ubiquitous stereotyped lazy malcontented brother in law, Arthur. Jack puts Stan in the shade when it comes to lechery - Grant's features add to the working class lounge lizard character magnificently, and he and Stan together are the bane of Inspector Blake's life, as he is the same to them. Stephen Lewis who played Blake / ( Blakey ), was a delightful very little Hitler, with a great gurney face and stupid moustache and when he pulled his worst faces whether it was out of anger and frustration at the pair's antics, or even when he was delighted to get the upper hand, and combined this with either his resigned mutterings followed by 'I 'ate you, Butler!', or if he was laughing as only Blakey can laugh, then I defy anyone anywhere not to end up laughing.
