I created a custom extension cord to run my Hobart Handler welder to a Craftsman genset using a L14-30P, 8AWG SO cable and this Cooper 6-50R receptacle.

This 6-50R is much smaller than my other Leviton 6-50R receptacle (in which I made a regular extension cord with 6-50P and 6-50R ends).

This receptacle came with all of the materials needed to do any installation, whether it be a free-hanging receptacle, or a wall-mounted one. It includes the strain-relief and 3 large screws (to mount this onto a wall for example).

4 stars? The reason why I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because how the plastic cover mounts to the metal backplate. It utilizes one screw, which is great, but the bottom (of the plastic cover) could be secured better (by having the plastic slide in a better channel in the metal back plate).

High quality receptacle. Just what I needed to create a 50' welder extension cord from a dryer outlet. Some other reviewers were concerned with possible durability issues with the plastic cover. I think you'd have to be pretty careless to break it, such as throwing the outlet across the shop floor or just throwing the whole cord on the floor. I've used it for nearly 40 hrs worth of work in my garage and have not caused any damage. If you're a field welder looking to make an extension using this and will be throwing it in the back of your truck and on the ground in the field, then just buy a real extension with molded ends for 5X what I've got in my garage welder extension cord.

The only negative is that the backing plate had some sharp edges that I broke with a file. It is a high-production stamped part, so it's understandable. Just be mindful to take care of it if you will be handling the receptacle frequently.

If your looking to connect your your 50 or 30 amp welder safely to your NEMA 10-30 dry socket then this is for you. I will post some picture and wiring diagrams to help you out. This socket is extremely high quality. It will take you only 5 mins or less to do. This also will save you a lot of money and headaches. You can run this through your dryer air duct temporarily. Safe welding you guys.
