5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks to NEC... Best LCD ... my eyes in peace now, February 26, 2008
This is my 6th LCD after Apple Cinema 23, this LCD is amazing, I'm using it for every thing editing, internet, programming.

The main feature of this NEC over Apple is AUTO BRIGHTNESS which changes the brightness according to the light of the room, and according to the picture itself (with dark pictures it increases brightness and with white background it decreases brightness), so your eyes will be comfortable.

Also it has 12-bit gamma represent the colors and I was amazed when I compared this LCD with Apple 23 which has 8-bit, there is a lot of details I couldn't see with Apple especially dark areas, however pictures in Apple seem a little more real, may be because of S-IPS panel used in Apple while this one has S-PVA (Not MVA).

The black color in this LCD is the best you can see over any LCD in the world, and I had a lot of monitors (Acer Ferrari 20, hp 19, IBM 20, Samsung 19, Apple cinema 23), sometimes when it shows black color, I think it is off, because of its deep black.

Note: I said it has S-PVA panel because it has OMINI colors and SAMSUNG LTM213U621 panel (according to their website) has OMINI certificate, and I couldn't find any 21 MVA panel has OMINI certificate which this NEC LCD2190uxp has it (see its specifications on NEC website wich is the same specifications of Samsung LTM213U6 panel), and every one knows that SAMSUNG only made PVA panel.

Sorry for my bad English but I have to say if you plan to buy LCD and you can afford this NEC don't hesitate, it worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feature-rich, high quality LCD monitor, February 23, 2007
By S. Schwarz (Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I own an NEC LCD2190UXp monitor. The reasons why I choose this model were that I wanted more than one DVI input, wanted an S-PVA panel and wanted to be able to turn off interpolation when not supplying the native resolution to the monitor (1600x1200 pixels). Originally I was looking into buying a Samsung 244T, but it was missing the features that I wanted. The Samsung and the NEC seem to use the same Samsung S-PVA panel though.

The 2190UXp has two DVI inputs, one is a pure digital input (DVI-D), the other is a combined digital/analog input (DVI-I). On top of these two DVI inputs the monitor has an independent standard 15-pin VGA input. So altogether the monitor has three video inputs and allows three computers being connected at the same time. A button on the bezel allows switching between them.

The features do not end here! The backlight can be automatically dimmed. A light sensor on the bezel senses ambient light and when enabled, the monitor then automatically adjusts the backlight brightness. The minimum and maximum brightnesses can be set via the on-screen menu.

Two up-down/left-right button sets in the lower right corner allow direct access to contrast and brightness adjustments without having to bring up the on-screen menu. They also allow for easy navigation through the on-sreen menus. The monitor has a normal user on-screen menu and an extended one for advanced setup (selected when powering on). When the on-screen menu is shown, labels are displayed next to the buttons on the bezel informing the user what the current functions of the respective buttons are. On the black bezel the buttons are not too visible, they are almost a bit difficult to locate when ambient light is dim.

There are other features, one for instance is a built-in clock to automatically switch the monitor on/off. Not sure who needs this, perhaps when used in a shop.

Raising and lowering the panel is totally easy as the mechanics make it that easy that one only needs two fingers to lift or to push the panel down. The range is approx. 155mm (6 inches). The panel can also be turned to portrait mode but I never use this.

Quality: When I compared this panel with my 4 year old Sony CPD-G520 21" CRT monitor, I couldn't believe the difference. I am sure the CRT had better colours when it was new than what it has now. The LCD panel has such great colours that I did no longer have any desire using the CRT at all. Colours are vivid, brightness is great, I even had to reduce the backlight brightness. I do not notice any so-called "mouse lag" that some LCD monitors have, but I am not a gamer, so I cannot tell for sure.

My monitor does not have any dead pixels. However, the monitor that I had initially had a dust particle (the size of about 3 pixels) between the LCD and the backlight. NEC replaced the monitor without trouble with another new one. What I disliked was that NEC did not have a published dead-pixel policy, something like a 7 or 30 day etc. "zero dead pixel" policy like some competitors have.

What you won't get: Does not have a HDMI or DVI/HDCP input to watch encrypted HD-videos. Does not have a built-in USB hub like some competitor models.

The printed manual is in 11 languages, however, to get the full manual you have to open the PDF manual on the CD. I would have preferred to have the full manual printed but just in the local language or no printed manual at all. Once the monitor is set up you should not need the manual anymore and so it is not an issue really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor, should have bought the next larger size, October 17, 2009

This is a beautiful monitor, as it should be for the price. I also bought the SpectraView software direct from NEC; this works with my Gretag-Macbeth Eye-One spectrophotometer to do easy calibrations & the calibration look-up table is then stored in the monitor, not in the video card LUT in the PC. I recommend calibrating to 90 candela for best match to prints. There is an observable change in brightness across the screen, maybe 1/3 f stop, but it would not be noticeable except in side-by-side comparison of two copies of the same image. I wish I'd spent the few hundred dollars for the next size up (24 inch, I think?).
