I first discovered this stuff at Home Depot in 2005 and decided to try it due to the anti-loading claims on the package. It was great. Not only did it not load up with old paint, it continued to cut *long* after standard AO sandpaper quit.

Fast forward to last week when I used the last sheet in the 20+3-sheet "Jobpack/Bonus Pack" and went back to HD looking for more. Of course HD no longer carries this product so I left with what they now have, 3M Pro Grade no-slip grip (tm) backing sandpaper. It supposedly lasts 7X longer than standard sandpaper due to the reinforced backing. Puh-lease...

With that unhappy discovery I went straight to the web and found the Norton 3X sandpaper at Amazon in all the grits I wanted. Three days later USPS delivered my package and I was using the Norton 3X again. It really is the "World's Best Sandpaper" as the package boasts.

I was glad to see that the 3X sandpaper is still made in Canada by Saint-Gobain.

I started using the Norton 3X sandpaper soon after its introduction and now use almost nothing else. For woodturning and woodworking I find it to hold up longer and has very good uniformity of grain size so few if any spurious scratches that you get with cheaper paper. Also, it resists loading and the light paper stands up well to flexing without tearing. I use 80 to 400 grit and all are excellent. It does cost more than common sandpaper but it lasts so long that it ends up being less expensive.

I have been using all sorts of sandpaper on my many furniture projects. On this last project, made from soft maple, I used this paper for the first time. I was amazed! It just kept on going, all I had to do was tap off the collected dust and go back to work. When I reverted to 'ordinary' paper it loaded up in 30 seconds of hand sanding and that was it. I have not compared it to carborundum papers.

My friend was having a hard time finding the Norton sand paper in the grit he wanted, at the local home improvement stores, both the big chains and the small local shops and it was his favorite brand of sandpaper. He builds handmade custom furniture so he is kind of particular. I was happy I could find his grit in his favorite brand.

I plane or scrape most surfaces in preparation for finishing so I'm only using 220, 320 and 400 grits now. Works just fine and the 20 piece pack is much cheaper here than at the home center. Higher grits work well for dealing with finishing issues too.

Complaints about paper wearing out too soon don't ring true for me. Likely they are trying to use too fine a grit too soon in the process.

I was going through a lot of 120 P paper hand sanding out stray brush marks, imperfections, etc from primer coats. I was able to buy a pack of Norton 3X 150 grit locally at a good price ( though amazon's price is better) so I gave it a go.
I love it!
I do not enjoy sanding prep while painting, (HATE IT!) but you have to do it. There are no shortcuts to great results. This paper makes a tedious job go much faster.
It doesn't load up so a piece lasts a very long time. In my case much more than 3X. And becuse it doesn't load up it continues to cut like a spanking new fresh sheet throughout the process, so the work goes much faster and you don't stop work every 20 minutes to get another fresh sheet. Just shake it out and keep going. If you are paying a crew this stuff would save its price in a day!

You will probably get away with a grit 1 grade finer than you had previously used since there is no initial "dulling" due to the paper loading up in the first minute or two. My change down from 120 grit regular paper to 150 grit 3X worked out just right. It cuts really fast so pay attention that you don't accidently go too far.

I have used almost every brand of sandpaper over the years for my wood working projects, and I have to say that this is my favorite. Not only does it cut fast and last a very long time, it is very uniform in the grit and does not have the odd flaw that leaves deep scratches in my projects like some other sandpaper does. Also the price is good on this paper considering how long it lasts.
