Almost seriously hurt in the 80's with an internal hooks spring compressor releasing suddenly and another repeat twice the same day one month ago, I decided my life was worth the extra $90 and bought this OTC brand.
I felt so comfortable using this tool and holding the spring (for a big block Chevy)compressed to work it into the control arms knowing it would not suddenly release. Due to its design this compressor can't unwind and the thrust ball bearing makes compressing smooth. The internal hooks compressors should be banned due to their sudden violent unwinding habit.

I have been a mechanic for many years, but always hated replacing heavy coil springs until purchasing this tool. Easy to use and will do even the toughest ones. I replaced the stock front springs in my own '06 Ram 2500 diesel with heavier 3900lb units and added 2" top spacers for more suspension travel. This unit made the install a snap! Highly recommended. Amazon price was over a $100 LESS than the toolmans price, and no sales tax.

I have done springs many ways over the years, with and without spring compressors, I even manage to get some springs for a 455 big block with AC springs into my parents 1971 Buick with a small-block and no ac :) ....I did that one without a compressor !

...anyway, the tool is a bit aggravating if you're trying not to scratch the paint on the springs and control arms....you kind of have to find your inner octopus to get everything lined up and properly seated but one you have it down, it goes pretty smooth. I was was able to cut my install time in half from one side to the next on my 69 Olds. Better have a 1-1/4 " wrench handy cuz there's no using an impact on this if you start the screw in the wrong spot ( I kind preferred turning by hand since its less violent) Close your eyes and hope the spring Q/C guy was awake while you're clamping up those coils !! I wasn't worried about the tool, its made in THE USA !! (even the bearing) I was more afraid of finding that one bad coil spring....that hard way ! Expensive but worth the investment.

I had pictures ....how do I post those ?

Changing the coil springs on my 1969 mustang and bought the cheap tool with the 4 prongs. even with clamps and wire ties the tool kept slipping. I knew sooner or later my luck would run out, and wanting to save my fender and my face, I bought this. I was very sad to see the expense of the tool was so high since it almost doubled what I paid for the replacement springs. But I put it together and used it. It is much safer than the prong tool! grabbed the spring very well. It is much safer and made the coil spring change much nicer, easier, faster, and safer. I had planned on selling this after I used it since I figured I might use it once. Well being a mechanic for a living this thing is going right in my tool box where it will stay, because it works that well. I highly recommend this to anyone.

I initially started my project using the internal coil spring compressor with those 4 hooks and something kept telling me to be cautious. I kept hearing this voice of reason as I was scared to death using that thing so I just junked it and began looking for something more reliable. So I found this compressor by otc and decided that I would take a chance on it. It arrived and the instructions were clear and concise. I was compressing springs out of and old 1973 ford torino and adding a spring spacer as well as brand new springs. I gotta tell everyone this compressor by otc performed flawlessly. I was able to compress my new springs all the way down and I did not feel in any way it was going to bust loose. The quality and craftsmanship is evident and I will be able to use this thing until the day I die. You have to really grease the shaft so I used bearing grease and alot of it just to be sure. The only drawback here is that it does not have it's own case that would have really made this tool completely over the top. Still all in all I am very happy with the purchase you can't place a dollar amount on your life. If one of those springs were to come loose I think you could die or even be maimed it wouldn't be pretty, but I never felt this way using this tool I felt confident the whole time. I never leave any feed back or reviews for anything ever but because I was so impressed by this tool I overwhelmingly felt the need to tell everyone what a great buy this was. Thank you and be safe!

This is an excellent USA made top quality tool that is worth the $$$. I used this spring compressor to remove the springs from a 1965 chevy pick up front end. This tool made the job easy and safe since there is no way the spring can escape from this compressor. Just like every tool I have used from OTC, this is a top quality USA made tool that worked as expected.

This is a pretty slick tool; I like the design quite a bit. The first time that you use it you may curse a bit, but then you will figure out how to use it more efficiently. I found that the flat pieces that hold the spring can be installed in the middle of the spring where it is easiest to access. Once installed, the top flat piece can be "threaded" up the spring by turning the center bolt.of the tool.

I used a graphite type grease on the threads. They are sharp and black oxide coated, so you will definitely want to keep them greased. The tool set is "made in USA with globally sourced components" and it generally seems well made. Interestingly, the flat pieces are cast iron. This worries me a little, but they certainly have worked flawlessly thus far. If they been made from machined tool steel, I would have given this tool set five stars.
