I have many recordings of the Rachmaninoff Concerto's and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini each with different artists on single CD's in order to avoid what happens here: where the conductor and sometimes even the pianist are not always up to the task of playing what is written.Soundwise all I have is a $90.00 Sony MHC-EC55 Mini Hi Fi Component System, yet both piano and orchestra sound like they are right in my living room. Performancewise, Lugansky is one of the very few pianists whos hands are big enough to play the opening chords of the Second Concerto, simultaneously the way they are written, without having to break the chords apart.(Krystian Zimerman's opening is the most awesome I have ever heard)Lugansky's expression is always in complete identification with the composers meticulous editing, packed with feeling but never becoming sentimental, and his technique impeccable.

I have never heard the beautiful 2nd Concerto played better than this.I also like his 3rd Concerto very much, but at the final close of the last movement when the big tune comes in, he, along with most everyone else, treats it like the soundtrack of a syrupy Hollywood movie.(It seems as though only Stephan Hough, Byron Janis and most recently Valentina Lisitsa are among the few that have read the letters Rachmaninoff sent to musicologist Josef Yasser explaining how his Concerto's should be played.

Three years ago (in September 2009) I had the opportunity to listen to a live concert given in Bucharest by the young star of the keyboard Nikolai Lugansky. I was then impressed by the finesse of his touch, by his refined musicianship and most of all by his artistic maturity. I knew that he is a specialist in Rachmaninov, although he on that very occasion performed the Fourth Concerto by Beethoven with the Orchestra Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Cristian Mandeal. Being convinced by his unimpeachable account as soloist, I started to look for Lugansky's recordings. And again the opportunity played a decisive role. When I came across to this 3-CD box set comprising his vision on Rachmaninov concertos plus variations (Paganini, Corelli, Chopin) I went for it instantly.

The result is completely satisfactory. All the concertos are flawlessly performed, with a proper Russian aroma, yet with a restrained taste for virtuosity. The technical difficulties of those four plus one finger-bending concertante works are elegantly surpassed by the aristocratic style of Lugansky's playing. The dialog soloist - orchestra (excellent CBSO) is carefully led by a fine conductor as Sakari Oramo. When it comes to solo variations (on Corelli and Chopin themes), the pianist simply shines. Here, in the absence of an orchestral partner, the dialog moves to a more profund level. It takes place between soloist and composer's most intimate thoughts.

All in all an enchanting Rachmaninov traversal offerd by one of the foremost pianists of the beginning of the XXI century! Don't avoid such a seductive experience, if you are a piano aficionado!

Brilliant performances by a brilliant Russian star. If you demand barnstorming closely-miked Rachmaninov a la Weissenberg, Argerich, or Horowitz, look elsewhere. More in the spirit of Steven Hough's sophisticated readings - fleet, thoughtful, at times understated. I have listened to the entire set several times and am more deeply impressed with each listening. I have found no notable deficiencies in the recording quality, although I readily admit that my audio equipment (iPod + Sennheiser HD-497 phones) has limitations.

I have read the review pointing out the recording issue. So I tried it on my AKG K701 with direct audio output from my laptop(playing ripped tracks, because I don't have a CD player... I have a SONY D50 as a hi-end player, but it is just not as convenient as my cheap laptop...). I know this is a ridiculous combination, however, it would be far enough to identify any recording glitch. I sampled at least one movement for every piece except those piano solo ones(if you found piano too low in those pieces, just turning up the volume would perfectly solve the problem...right?), without noticing any big problem. The piano is actually pretty clear.

As for the performance, I think I should update my own opinion later. Generally speaking, Lugansky's performance is more of classicism than of romanticism. Although that might not be the style everybody loves for Rach, what I want to say is that quite a few of my friends who love Rach crazily speak highly of Lugansky(altough they have only heard other recordings).

At last, I want to point out that this boxset has all 3 CDs in beautiful jewel cases, which makes it an even better gift for Rach fans.

-Update Dec 21 2011
There are some obvious noises near 9:07 and 9:10 in the finale of Piano Concerto No.3. I am not sure if they are introduced during the ripping(which is though not quite possible). Will check it later.
