I ordered both the 3M and the Mckanica silicone caulk remover to remove silicon caulk a prior owner of my RV slathered all over the seams. It was impossible to get the caulk off using mechanical methods, boy did I try. The area of the RV I was testing on was a seam between a painted metal flashing and the fiberglass side wall. I applied the 3m first letting it set overnight. Some of the silicon was loosened and with some work came off with a scraper but there was still a good deal of silicone left on the surface. It seamed to only act on the very outer layer of silicone. The paint on the metal flashing came off as well, not exactly what I wanted but the instructions warned that this may happen. At this point I decided that the 3M was not going to suffice. I just couldn't take the time to re-paint and do multiple applications. On to applying the Mckanica. The Mckanica is a gel and comes in a caulking tube. After squeezing a little bit out on a plastic tray I applied it to the same area which proved to be too much for the 3M. After a few hours I came back and wow not only did the Mckanica take off what was left after the 3M application but the areas which were untreated by the 3M but treated by Mckanica came completely clean. You could just wipe the silicone away with a cloth. On top of that the Mckanica did not remove the paint off of the metal flashing like the 3M did. I will be ordering more Mckanica for this project and saving the 3M for bathroom duty.

After purchasing our home, I realized that the caulks in that home had never been replaced for decades. They had hardened so much that I could not get them off, even after using very sharp objects. I searched online and found this product on Amazon as none of the hardware stores in our area had a clue about removing old caulk. After reading the mostly positive reviews, I decided to give it a try and I am glad that I did. I applied this product quite liberally to the old caulk, let it sit for more than 12 hours and lo and behold, the caulk started to give way.

I would highly recommend this product to any one else in my boat, but do want to make one thing clear. This product is not a magic and it does not automatically dissolve the old caulk. Even after it softened the caulk, I did have to spend quite some time to remove the old caulk. So please have the right expectations when you purchase and use this product.

I had 20 year old latex caulk on a fiberglass tub/shower unit which remained after removing the shower doors; it was like concrete! This stuff worked lik a charm, but I had to leave it on for at least 24-36 hours (covered with plastic wrap) before I could scrape it off with a plastic scraper. And there was no damage to the fiberglass. I highly recommend it.

I used this product to soften/remove acrylic latex caulk along kitchen counter back splash. It worked well and and made the job easier. Would use it again. I found that applying it with an old toothbrush worked better than trying to apply it directly from the bottle.

My shower needed to be re-caulked and I had already tried another product for a portion of the job. The other product worked but also required a lot of manual scraping to remove the silicone caulk. For the second part of the job I purchased the 3M caulk remover. The difference was significant between the two products. The first product required that the caulk be removed first then it would help remove what was left (sort of). The 3M product didn't require any pre-work just cover the caulk then wait at least 2 hours. I put the caulk remover on the silicone and left it overnight. In the morning I used my scraper and was surprised at how easily the majority of the silicone came right off. There was still a little residue left but nothing significant that wouldn't come off with a little scrapping. I wish I had started the project with the 3M remover! Note: my shower enclosure is ~3 years old so the silicone is not old.

After peeling off several layers of various kinds of caulk around my 50s tub, I eventually found a layer of something that I originally thought was some kind of porcelain drip edge, because it was so hard. No. It was a bead of very, very ancient caulk. Caulk so old and hard I considered just grinding it off.

Instead, I got some of this caulk remover. It works like paint stripper - I can't say it all came off on the first go, but it did work. It wasn't magical - I mean, the caulk didn't turn into water and run off down the drain overnight, trembling in fear of 3M, but it did soften it up enough to scrape it away with a razor blade.

If your caulk isn't as old as mine was, I imagine it'll work great. It probably doesn't work that well on silicone, since that's a completely different material, but I wouldn't know.

I bought this product after my husband couldn't scrape hard, 17-year old caulk off our tub surround without leaving marks on the fiberglass. You apply this stuff over the hard caulk and in a couple hours, you can easily scrape it off with a putty knife or something similar. You may have to reapply to thicker areas if it can't penetrate in one application, but that's not a big deal. I would definitely recommend this to anyone trying to remove rockhard caulk from a surface.
