Permatex makes claims it works on brake caliper pins, but it is up to you to confirm this grease is compatible with the rubber seals - Buyer Beware!

If you have rubber seals on your disc caliper pins that are made from Buna-S (Buna-S is compatible with glycol brake fluid (DOT 3), this synthetic hydrocarbon grease may cause very damaging swelling, possibly destroying the seal and ultimately your brakes.

The MSDS claims the composition is a "Trade Secret", and their Technical Data Sheet states it is a non-silicone, non-petroleum material, but if it is a polyalphaolefin (PAO) lubricant it is NOT recommended for Buna-S seals - and you can't make an informed decision by their literature what this stuff is.

EDPM seals are OK, but you can't tell by looking at the seals, you have to be TOLD by the manufacturer of your auto this grease is compatible with your seals.

My '86 Subaru Service Manual explicity requires ONLY SILICON LUBE for the caliper pins (so does '90 vintage Hondas). Silicon is safe to use with all Buna-S, SBR, and EDPM seals - it doesn't make sense to use anything else unless you are SURE the grease is compatible with the caliper pin seals.

The grease is fine for disc pad and drum brake metal-to-metal brake contact points, but it is *irresponsible* to recommend it for caliper pins when the seals may be compromised. This would be grounds for a lawsuit on a safety device such as auto brakes if there is no disclaimer. I'm wiping off this stuff and putting only Permatex 24115 Ultra Disk Brake Caliper Lube Silicone Formula on the pins.

Be careful with this stuff it caused the rubber caliper slide bushings to swell on my car. This product says compatible with rubber according to Permatex website but I think they are wrong. The MSDS says proprietary blend, well something in that blend is incompatible with rubber causing it to swell. I like this stuff just don't let it touch your rubber slide bushings.

This is a pretty good brake lube that'll work fine in most cases. Be aware that some manufacturers such as subaru and toyota make their rubber brake parts out of a different type of rubber than most manufacturers. I currently don't know what subaru recommends, but toyota often recommends lithium soap based glycol grease. This is the reason multiple reviews claim it's incompatible with rubber.

So in conclusion, it's a good brake lube, but do a bit of research to find what type of grease your manufacturer recommends.

2000 subaru legacy. If I use this stuff on the front caliper pins between brake pad changes, it burns off. If I don't change it every few months, the pins stick so bad, they need heat to get them out. If I use silicone (red container) permatex every year and a half, there is still lube on the pins and I can just wipe it off and add more. Whole different thing. It's OK for the back caliper pins but why bother?

I used this product on my complete (all new parts) brake job in November of 2014. Recently had issues with the drivers side rear caliper sticking and the brake pads were dragging. Disassembled the caliper and the rubber bushings inside the caliper, that were new and lubricated with this lube, were completely seized to the pins...I couldn't believe it! I had to use pliers and a good bit of force to force the bushings free of the pins...soooo disappointed that after 5 months and only 1100 miles, I have to completely disassemble the breaks on my diesel truck, clean off this disappointing lube and replace all the rubber bushings again, and reinstall everything. NO WARNING ON BOTTLE OF THIS POTENTIAL DISASTER!!! Very disappointed to say the least...

I used this lube when rebuilding several calibers on two of my motorcycles (4 piston pots on each caliber). Its helps greatly with re-assembly and seems to keep the seals from any sticking. Its been at least 3 years since I've done the brakes, no problems what so ever, no seal swelling, highly recomended...

As a side note, a previous poster mentioned how thick the lube is. Brake calibers, pistons, fluid will get very hot and will need a thicker grease that will not melt and get thown off..

I completely agree with other posts suggesting this grease eats up rubber boots that cover caliper pins.
I used this product over years and I had to buy replacement boots until I stopped using it. Boots get soft and spongy until they completely come off the caliper pin seats due to rubber degradation. Not sure where you would use this product if not on pins???

I just used this on my 2011 Subaru Outback and on my 2011 Nissan Sentra. No problems at all. I read things about this swelling seals and harming rubber boots so I called my local dealer on both. Both dealers use CRC synthetic lube and stated this lube will work fine. This is a synthetic lube also. Now I am not a chemist and I do not know what is in all lube but if a company states you can use it on rubber seals and later it swells those seals I can surely see a lawsuit at some point if someone is hurt or killed due to brake failure from this product. One cannot rely on everything they see/hear on the internet. Call your dealer and see what they use and go from there. I thought this lube was great with no issues in use at all. I could barely wash it off my hands after I used it. I used CRC in the past and was not impressed but this grease worked great. 20+ yrs in my prior career as an ASE Master and I-Car Gold Auto Body technician I think I have worked on a few cars over the years. I have done hundreds of brake jobs in my life and I have rarely ever seen swollen seals or rubber boots unless they were very old and never maintained well prior.

In all reality copper type lube is the way to go rated to 1800 F. 3m makes some good stuff.
