It works great over the door. If the clearance is not sufficient you have three choices:

1. Sand down the top of the door
2. Sand down the item to improve the clearance
3. Find another door.

The item is hard plastic, so you can't take off too much material or it may become overly brittle and snap. Unfortunately, the item was too narrow for a cubicle coat hook (my fault for ordering before I found out the specs), and I had to find another.

Luckily, a Dollar Tree coat hook is flexible enough to do the job, and its only a buck. I took off the top of the cubical and slid it through the created-opening. The item isn't a perfect fit, but it works.

The picture is deceptive and tries to make the hook look chrome and small in size, while in actuality it is large, white and plastic. I also find it a little loose on my standard apartment doors, so it often comes off along with my towel.

Have you ever had to change your clothes or use a shower in a campground restroom? Ever notice that most of there time there are no hooks or just a small one for all your clothes. I bring this hook along and place it over a stall door. No more dropping my clothes on the ground or "puddles" on the concrete. I bought two because you know you are going to leave one behind someday. With no shipping fee, these cost less than my local homewares store (if they even have them) when I include the cost of gas to drive over and back.

This hook does not work well on standard doors. The part that goes on top of the door is too thick and does not allow the door to close properly.
I will not recommend this product. It does not work as expected.

As someone who moves around a lot and hates drilling holes into walls (land lady problems), I really appreciate over-the-door hooks because I can just move them around onto different doors. The only thing about this one is that it is too thick to fit between most doors and the wall, so I can only use it on a few doors.

I like the design, and it would have worked well if there was a bigger gap between the door and the door frame that I intended to use on. I will use this on the closet door instead.
The lower hook with ridges can hold 3 hangers. There are no screw eyes as described (the product feature didn't makes sense to me).
I recommend getting a metal (thinner) over-the-door hook if it is intended to be put on a tightly shut door...dah.
