This rack is misidentified as a "steamer" as it is actually merely a cooling rack. The very first time I used it in water it rusted and stained a brand new stainless steel pot I had just purchased for $100. It is cheap pot metal which is not designed to be used with water or with steam. It rusted so fast it seemed almost magical.

An important note:
The company selling this rack through Amazon on this page at time of posting (MV Trading Co.) does not back up its sales. They simply say "we never said it was stainless" as if selling a steamer which can't be used as a steamer is excusable if you don't explicitly claim it won't rust out the very first time you use it. This company is highly unprofessional in my experience and I would recommend avoiding them at all costs.

Post note/update- I see that the company no longer describes this item as a "steamer rack" in the header, but rather a cooling rack. I'm glad they corrected it as such.

Okay, first let me admit that I'm using this for a purpose other than its intended. I use it at the bottom of my hot water canning bath to keep the jars from sitting directly on the bottom of the pot. So that means this sits in hot to boiling water for anywhere up to an hour, depending on how long the jars are just sitting in the hot water, waiting for the jams or pickles to be ready to go into the jars.

Using it the way I do, the solder at each joint, and maybe the wire itself, oxidizes and turned orange. Hasn't compromised the integrity of the structure in any way, but unappealing. All I can say is you do not want to leave it sitting in water, because at this point I'd never use mine as an actual cake rack - I wouldn't want food to touch it directly anymore.

Now, my other complaint applies to any use you have for it, and is the real reason it's down to a 3 star rating. It is not level. The wire grate is not taut, and it bows in the center. This is annoying when using it as a canning stand, but I think this would be equally aggravating when using it as a cake rack. You don't want your cake cooling into a concave shape!

I like it because it is a crosshatch grate, but not a fan because of the center dipping, and the fact that it is damaged by any unusually long exposure to water.

I would not get it again, but on the other hand, it works well enough that I will continue to use it until it really needs replacing.

This is not necessarily what I'd consider a high-quality baking cooling rack, but I don't care. That's not why I bought it. Finding it perfectly sized, we bought this and removed the folding legs to put at the bottom of our parakeet's cage to keep her from continually ripping up the paper liner covering the round tray at the bottom of her cage. The 10.5" size was a perfect fit. Our parakeet was laying eggs and ripping up the paper liner for nesting material. If we had a male parakeet it might have been worth the hassle to let her get away with it for the sake of potential offspring. In any event, we supplied a few white marbles (for fake eggs) to try to calm things down, but to no avail. Thankfully, after putting this somewhat modified cross-wire rack on the bottom of our bird cage our clean up of shredded liners ceased. Can't say that our parakeet really took to it at first, but she's adapting just fine and laying on her "fake" marble eggs at the bottom. Everyone (bird included) are now "happy campers!"

We use this rack in our NuWave oven instead of the rack that came with the oven. It holds food like sweet potato fries or other small pieces of food that would fall through the rack that came with the oven. Its folding legs allow height adjusment. The two rack stack well in the oven.

I want a cooling rack for multipurpose. This one fulfills my expectation. In addition to bread cooling, I used it as a baking rack. I especially like the adjustable legs. Sometimes I want to raise the rack higher so that I can put some spicy stuff underneath to smoke the food on the rack. This item is also strong enough to support the food above and has very good quality. So I love this product very much.

This cooling rack is just the right size for numerous pans when they come out of the oven and for cooling baked goods when they come out of the pan. I rarely store it because it is used so often. It sits next to the stove and is used from everything from cakes, cassarole pans, lids, cupcakes, and muffins. It is very stable.

Don't buy this. It is mis-represented as stainless steel. Rusted the first time I used it. It's probably poorly chrome plated steel - you don't want chromium in your cooking!

Nit too impressed - the thing wobbles when put a flat surface. Not so much that it won't be usable, but still... The wiring is also not really flat, it curves upwards a little. I can flatten it with my hand but then it bounces back up. Probably more of a 2.5 starts than 3.
