I should have expected that for the price these were going to be cheap, but boy was I surprised just how cheap they actually are. The spring tension on the retaining lever is almost non-existent, in order to get the retaining teeth to engage you have to help the lever along by hand. The teeth themselves are very large, and only the last one is actually tight enough on most clamps to actually relieve pressure on the hose - you actually have to put so much pressure on the handles to engage that tooth that the handles contort and twist. Even with these in my toolbox I find myself passing over them for plain old 90-degree needle nose pliers. Save your money, or if you need to use these on a regular basis go with a manufacturer of higher quality.

*** When I first tried the pliers on a band clamp, I was going to send it back to Amazon for a refund. The handles are arched, which when fully depressed, limits the business-end from fully squeezing the clamp. I read another review where the owner resorted to cutting off half of one handle to allow the tool to close the extra 1/2 inch needed to remove clamps and engage the ratcheting device. I went a different route. I drilled out the rivets on one of the handles, reversed it, and secured it with screws and nuts. Now the handles squeeze tightly against each other giving the tool the extra 1/2 inch it needs to fully depress a clamp and engage the final ratcheting tooth. I am very pleased with the finished product, but am angry that OTC didn't take the time to test their tool before selling it to the public! This is a handy tool to have in your box if you don't mind doing some extra work to make it usable. I have included a picture showing the original handle setup next to the one I modified.

They worked on a larger spring ring clamp, like 2.2", more or less OK. I thought OTC was OWATONNA Tool Co., as in USA, but these are marked TAIWAN. Like many offshore tools, the look alike but perform poorly due to bad craftsmanship and lack of attention to detail. The metal flexes under load. This caused the 3/8 ID spring ring clamp to repeatedly fly out dangerously. The ratchet teeth are so large as to be almost useless. On the small clamp mentioned, the last position would not lock in because the tool handles came together before the ratchet tooth became engaged... because the tool was flexing too much... on the smallest clamp ever [almost]. It was a notch better than regular pliers but far short of a top quality tool such as Mac, Matco, Snap-on, etc. Put your money towards a real tool, or make do with what you already have.

One time after wasting way too much time in a job getting a hose clamp off, I thought to myself, 'I bet they make a really cool tool that would make this a piece of cake.' They do. Here it is.

For hose clamps that are right in front of you, these work fine, but it's sometimes just as quick to use normal pliers. However, for difficult to reach hose clamps, like on lower radiator hoses, heater hoses, etc., these make a huge difference. It's easy to waste 10 minutes trying to get a stubborn hose clamp off when you can't get to it with normal pliers. With these, you simply turn the ends to the correct angle, slip these pliers down there, squeeze, maybe shoot the clamp with some silicone spray to get it to slide more easily, and take it right off. No swearing, no removing other things to get a better angle, just 30 seconds of drama free work.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the round head one is for, but I mostly just use the other one. I've used the round one for smaller spring clamps, but maybe there's a type of clamp that I don't see much where the round one is perfect. Even if you only use one of these most of the time, this is still a great deal.

I needed a good set of hose clamp pliers to reach a very hard to reach hose on my Toyota.
These worked well and I thought the price was reasonable.

I purchased these for my shop and have been very happy with the purchase. The reason I give these 4 stars is because these pliers could stand a bit of improvement. The rubber grips are nice and have held up well, but given the fact that they are used to service cooling systems which are full of slippery coolant, they should be knurled and not smooth. Since the rubber grips are smooth they become slippery when coated with coolant and are a little more difficult to use. The other thing that would be an improvement would be if the handles were spring loaded. I have another set that are spring loaded and it makes it easier to open the jaws to put them over the hose clamp. Overall I am happy with my purchase but would probably look to upgrade these at some point.

Manipulating automotive hose clamps without proper tools is frustrating at best.

These are excellent tools for the task, provided you have reasonable access to the clamp. Two separate tools, rather than one tool with different ends, ideally solves the problem of securely grasping the various clamps types securely.

It is possible to find other tools of this kind, but I have not seen any near this level of quality for the price. Highly recommended.
