I recently purchased a new workbench with a 72x30 maple butcher block top. I researched various types of finishes before settling on tung oil. I was looking for a durable finish that would penetrate the surface, and everything I read about tung oil suggested that it would fit the bill.

The Real Milk Paint website has very thorough instructions for using tung oil and they recommend as many as 10 coats for high-use surfaces. I ended up applying seven coats to the top surface and two to the bottom, with at least 24 hours in between. For all coats I thinned the oil 50/50 with mineral spirits to help with penetration. I spread the mixture with a foam brush, let it sit for an hour or so, then wiped off the excess with cotton rags. I went through about 1.5 quarts of tung oil for the whole job.

The end result was a beautiful, protective finish, but I'll caution you of the following:
* Tung oil definitely has an odor when wet, which I would describe as nutty. (Yes, it's a bit nutty.) It's not a bad smell but it gets a little more unpleasant as it dries and it lingers for a month or two. It's been several months since I finished my bench top and I still catch a whiff of it now and then.
* I was expecting to be able to use my new workbench fairly soon after applying the last coat, but the surface kept a slight tacky feel for over a month. (This might have been affected by the humidity in my basement.)
* The oil does tend to raise the grain of the wood, so it's probably advisable to sand between coats.

We've had a scandinavian teak table for 16 years, and when purchased it came with a quart of Danish teak oil. We oiled the table twcie a year for a long time, but after having babies the maintenance fell dramatically. When we started having white water / moisture marks on the table more regularly we started oiling again, but soon used up almost the entire quart.

[Side note about water marks on furniture: mix a little wood ash from a fire place with some wood oil (or even vegetable / olive oil) until you have a thick paste like tooth paste. The ash should be as fine as possible, almost like powder prior to mixing. Then use a LOT of elbow grease and rub, mostly with the grain of the wood. I'll rub in an "X" pattern across the grain quite a bit on our teak table as well. It'll take some time, but the water mark will disappear. After rubbing for minutes, take a clean cloth coated in oil and wipe up whatever didn't get rubbed in. If you still see a ghost of white, rub with more ash/oil paste. I used to rub with a cloth, but now just wear nitrile (latex, whatever you've got) gloves so I have a better feel and none of the paste is soaked up into the cloth.]

Back to our teak table. I started looking for replacement teak oil and was shocked to see everything was diluted with mineral spirits or other solvents. Some teak "oil finish"products don't even contain any oil at all! After researching, I discovered this was the norm. Our original bottle of teak oil was much thicker and darker than anything I could find elsewhere. More research led me to realize that real treak oil is hard to find and very expensive. The closest product in a real oil without solvents is Tung oil (from a nut).

This oil is THICK.

This is a great product. All natural and gives an amazing finish to the wood. I applied this on my old growth redwood sofa and on my teak outdoor patio furniture. I would strongly recommend this over anything else to finish your wood. Its a bit of work, but you won't be disappointed with the results.
Don't believe those 1-star 2-star reviewers. This is the real oil and needs some time to dry and adding multiple coats helps with the finish.

As others have recommended here to dilute this with a solvent mix, i didn't do that. I just applied it as-is on my Sofa and i am very pleased with the results. Just follow the instructions on the container. And Its not necessary for you to dilute the oil. It can be used as-is.

Enjoy!!

The product name covers it; 100% Tung Oil. It will not solve every finishing problem, but leaves a nice low-shine finish on the bowls I make. It is easy to work with, pleasant odor, and easy clean up. It is that rare finish that you don't mind getting all over your hands. Be sure to do some research on thinning the oil to help absorption. I have been using naptha or turpentine. I make another concoction of equal parts of tung oil, spar varnish, and turpentine for a higher gloss.
I've read that some people pour water in the can to take up air space to prevent oxidation. I use propane, but think the water idea is worth trying if you're not worried about freezing.

That's the reason for the three stars.

I specifically wanted the plastic jar. Much less difficult to open after you start using it. Metal cans do not seal as well either. Since Tung Oil polymerizes when exposed to oxygen.

The last batch I bought (comercially) over a year ago is still good in the plastic quart.

Beyond that, it is 100% tung oil, unlike the hardware store "claims to be" variety.

Mixed with citrus solvent it is a superb finish--always. And, food safe.
