What? That doesn't make any sense! Isn't this a pencil?

The Century model was once available as an actual pencil, with a simple twisting advancing mechanism and a writing tip sized just right for the lead to go through. Removing the cap and eraser, you had a very large storage area. You could fit a dozen extra leads in it and write all week without needing to carry a separate box of leads.

Now the "pencil" is actually the pen model with a pencil converter inside. This is lame for several reasons:

1. At the front end, you get an extra tube sticking through the large ballpoint opening with a smaller hole for the lead to come out, which looks much less elegant than the old pencil. Yes, it's just looks, but you are paying for that.

2. On the inside, the pencil mechanism is a very skinny device no larger than the ballpoint refill (the "pencil" essentially contains 2 mechanisms, the ballpoint AND the pencil converter inside of that, leaving little room for storage). You can fit 3 extra leads in, but then it gets crowded. Also, though you physically "twist" the cap 1/4 turn to advance the lead, it is really operating as one of those complex clickie mechanisms which eventually start to slip.

3. Cross doesn't even bother to make the caps different any more. In the old days, the black top hat of the pen had a little metal dot on it, and the pencil was just black. That way you could tell if you were grabbing the pen or pencil out of your cup full of pens. Now they are both the same (strangely, both WITH the added dot), and you will grab the wrong one 50% of the time.

4. The eraser is much smaller.

Cross is cheapening its products. This pencil was redesigned in order to use the same barrels as for its pens. Unfortunately, in order to do so, Cross had to design it with a retractable inner point that is clumsy and can be easily broken off. Also, the lead does not stay locked in position the first time it is extended; it pushes right back into the tip, and I have to crank it out a second time in order for it to stay in position and be useable.

I can't stand the lead feed on this pencil. You have to remove the cap, twist it, press the end to push out some lead, turn it back, replace the cap and then twist the cap EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO EXTEND THE LEAD. So inconvenient and it doesn't work perfectly, it takes fiddling with to get it to work right. Guess it is back to the drawing board to find a pencil that feeds in a simple, usable way.

I prefer refil pencils, pens, etc., and thought, maybe new, innovated ways - why not try it out. Well first, you need specific cartridges and not just the lead refill. And then the fairly complicated mechanism stopped working effectively after two months. Sometimes you were able to write and at other times there was nothing, and you had to take the thing apart. So, stick with the regular & simple refill pens. It's too much aggregation. Very disappointing.

Very disappointed. The product description needs to say that it isn't really a Cross pencil. It's a pen with a pencil converter. And it did not come with any lead at all. I had trouble loading the lead into the barrel, had trouble getting the lead to come out, and it won't stay put when you try to write with it. I gave up and put it back into the box. I should have read the other reviews before purchasing, but hey, it's a Cross, I've used them for many years, what could go wrong? Don't buy it.

This pencil does not work like my Dad's pencil of older days. Instead of screwiing out lead in a continuous turning motion it works like a Pentel mechanical pencil except that repeated twists push out the lead vs pushing down a plunger. The smaller support for the lead retracts into the tip when you close it up so it is still a good functioning tool. Just not quite the finer instrument of days gone by. I need to use pencil in my work as well as pen and I do find that this Cross pencil does the job well and looks good doing it. The black eraser refills are the right ones for the 0.7 mm pencil though the numbers on my first purchase pointed to the yellow ones. It works.

Nice pencil but the insert is not as nice as the previous pencil they made. This is the pen case with a pencil insert. If you want to distinguish between them you have to put black paint on the end to cover the silver dot like I did. Not a good idea by Cross.

I have had this pencil since 1992 when I was in middle school. I used it during all of my college time and beyond. It still works like new nearly 20 years later. The surface does get scratches on it over time but that is to be expected. I would suggest buying a separate eraser and not using the built in one simply because it is cheaper to buy erasers than refill erasers for the pencil. You can buy 3rd party lead refills and load them into the pencil from the front.

The design of the pencil is great. It is very comfortable to use and had a slight weight to it that makes it feel like a quality product.

I will always use Cross writing product just based on the performance of this pencil. They have a customer for life.
