Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A box-office smash, an Academy Award winner* and a fan favorite since it first flew into theatres in December 1978, Superman: The Movie assembles a cast and creative contingent as only a big movie can. At its heart (just as in three sequels) is Christopher Reeve's intelligent, affectionate portrayal of a most human Man of Steel. Watching Superman again isn't just like being a kid again. It's better. The movie's legacy soared even higher when director Richard Donner revisited this beloved adventure 22 years later and integrated eight minutes into the film. Enjoy more footage of the Krypton Council, a glimpse of stars of prior Superman incarnations, more of Jor-El underscoring his son's purpose on Earth and an extended sequence inside Lex Luthor's gauntlet of doom. Reeve, Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Gene Hackman (Luthor) and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) give indelible performances that fuel the film's aura of legend. Looks like a swell night for flying. Why not come along?

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!, September 26, 2006
By Jem (MD, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
It is about time that this classic gets the full treatment--loaded with extras. However, if you are also interested in the Superman II special edition, it is more cost effective to get the "The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection - (8-Disc Deluxe Special Edition)" which is currently the same price as buying this set and II, only you get films 3 and 4 too (which is better than paying for them, right?)

Also, Amazon has the Richard Donner Cut of Superman II available for pre-order which has the extended version of the film never before available (the special edition will be the theatrical release only).

5.0 out of 5 stars worth every penny, April 11, 2007
For someone that grew up on Superman, this release is worth every penny because it contains the ORIGINAL THEATRICAL RELEASE!!!! I want to see the movie I seen as a kid. Not one that has been adulterated. I wish they would stop messing with films, and just give us the originals. Or at least give us an option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where it all began for GOOD Comic Book Movies, May 10, 2008
By Dark Knight Jr. "Movie Nut" (Hurst, Tx. United States) - See all my reviews
Here, ladies and gentlemen, is the classic that helped inspire director Christopher Nolan to create the gem that is Batman Begins (2005). This film is so inspirational and legendary, that director Bryan Singer couldn't even come up with a good way to reinvent everyone's favorite superhero for a new generation, without sticking to similar images and themes from this film. Sure, there was modern technology and what-not in his film, but Richard Donner's Superman (1978) is so well-known and well-made that a complete redo was way too hard to conceive. Don't get me wrong, Superman Returns (2006) is no sequel to Superman or its sequel Superman II, but the effect that Donner's Superman had on the world is clearly shown in the recent re-boot, which really takes what it needs from Superman and its sequel, and goes on from there. Returns is really a homage, but I guess it could be a remake of sorts. But as the title of my review suggests, Superman was the true beginning for GOOD comic book based movies and tv shows, and not the ridiculous, yet classical, George Reeves and Adam West efforts from the 50's and 60's. This film has aged in certain ways, at least in my opinion, but for the most part it still holds up to modern films, and is where anyone who is new to the story of Superman should start out, before going on to any other adaptations, save for Smallville.
