Biography

Australian Sarah Blasko arrived in the U.S. in 2005 with a pedigree that could not be ignored: trailing a list of ARIA Award nominations in the categories of Best Album, Best Female Artist, Best Breakthrough Artist, and Best Pop Release, she also distinguished herself -- and perked the ears of rock skeptics -- by being tagged somewhere along her cross-continental journey with the moniker… Read more in Amazon's Sarah Blasko Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, Original and Very Listenable, April 27, 2007
By John Lonergan (Melbourne, Victoria Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My first experience of Sarah Blasko was live, at the Melbourne "Make Poverty History" concert in Melbourne, November 2006. Bono and Pearl Jam opened the show, and then Sarah (if I may call her that) wandered onto the stage.
She did 5 or 6 songs, and I couldn't wait to get to a store and buy this album. I love it, and I think most people will.
Her style is original, though she reminds me at times of Nico, and perhaps even Dido...with a touch of Bjork maybe. But still, original!
As impressive as her singing is her songwriting - strong, relevant stories set to evocative and superbly arranged music.
She really is quite a talent, and it's early days yet. Buying this album (her second) gets in you in close to the Ground Floor of her musical career, and I think it will be an interesting ride.
At this stage she seems more comfortable as a boutique artist - small venues, intimate shows. I wonder where she will take herself and her music in the longer term.
But enough of that.....for now, we have a wonderful album, produced to perfection and beautifully presented.
This is an album for a wide variety of musical tastes, and I recommend it especially for people who want something different, who are looking for someone who is emerging, and who are hoping for someone who has something strong to say.
And after all, she has already had Bono and Pearl Jam as her opening act - quite an achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars ignore bad reviews buy this NOW NOW NOW !!!!, October 8, 2009
what is goin' on here ????
people panning this amaaazing album.
this picks up from 'overture' before it.
the songs are smarter deeper ... our girl's maturing.
the first we heard of this was [explain] & wow ...
what a beautifully tender heart-invading song.
her wings are spreading here folks ... come for the ride.
if you're not sure after first listen ... take another.
i'm sure this album will become a fave ... very quickly.
try getting 'hammer' out of your head after hearing it.
i just saw her perform it live a week ago tonite in a
little victorian town called 'castlemaine' & if you get
a chance to see this girl live ... do it.
i was lucky enough to meet her backstage after the gig,
& she was the sweet sweet generous girl i hoped she'd be.
don't you love it when your heroes DON'T let you down ?
i could go through all these songs for you ... reviewing each one,
but i reckon just go buy the bloody thing.
drive along a beachside road listening to 'queen of apology'.
i was lucky enough to be listening to it on a speeding train,
& the song just carried me away ... this album kills me.
please get it NOW NOW NOW.
& if you haven't yet ... grab her first album 'overture & the underscore'
& then grab her newby 'as day follows night'.
it's all good & someday this girl will get her day on top.
i follow her journey with open ears & a keen eye.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, January 28, 2008
I really love Sarah Blasko's voice. Some of the songs on her first CD are really cool, edgy, and atmospheric. I also love her sweet, heart-rending version of "Dont Dream it's Over" from the Commonwealth Games, which can be seen on You Tube. So, I was eager to hear something new and creative from her.

However, it seems that whoever has had direct influence and direction over her in the music industry and studio is doing her a disservice. Her new "band" does nothing to enhance her music, and the songs on this new CD are bland and dreary, almost void of anything creative or interesting. They just move on horizontally from start to finish, with no progressive elements at all. I really agree with the reviewer Steven Guy. The lyrics are very self-absorbed and the music lethargic, like she, herself, is disinterested in them.

I don't understand how this CD could be selling well in Australia or anywhere. Just off the top of my head, I think she could be benefited by the influence of people like Sarah McGlaughlin, Peter Gabriel, or Alison Sudol/A Fine Frenzy.
