5.0 out of 5 stars universal masterpiece to be viewed, December 15, 2006
By Edna Palatnik (Rio de Janeiro, RJ Brazil) - See all my reviews
Thanks Kino has brought to light, after 5 years of theatrical release, this magnificent and emotionally intense masterpiece by brazilian director Luiz Fernando Carvalho. This poignant universal story, adapted after Raduan Nassar's book, presents the parable of the Prodigal Son, seen through the lenses of Carvalho, in a deep, passionate, tragic and at the same time, poetical narrative. The photography evolves accompanying the story, in a crescendo - from the monotonous familiar countryside farm journey chores, presented in pastel tones, until the climax,in bright luxuriant brazilian landscape colors, as the rythm of passion rises, intermingled by interior candle- light chiaro scuros, all punctuated by a vigorous and vibrant music. The DVD has a pristine transfer and crystal clear sound. Each frame turning into a moving work of art. Finally, many people around the world will have the opportunity to view this awarded film and get in touch with a talented director, in this beautiful and careful edition. The Director's Interview helps to elucidate his work and artistic thoughts. The b&w still gallery is inspired. A worthwhile buy for anyone, any time. Excellent job, Kino!
