I just installed and tried this software and am surprised that the other reviewer gave it five stars. It does indeed have a lot of content, but your access to that content is slowed by the interface, which was designed for much simpler computers, in an era when people were less familiar with technology.

To "enter" the program you get a cute animation into a sort of tunnel place where a control panel drops down, with sound effects. You can click on Content, and get a menu of many familiar topics appropriate for the study of chemistry. So far so good, but pretty soon you find that this old interface is slowing your access to the material.

For instance, a typical screen has either about 50-100 words of text, or perhaps 30 words plus an illustration of some kind. Paragraphs are sometimes interrupted in mid-sentence, and to move forward requires clicking on a navigation icon in the bottom corner of the screen. Seriously -- no use of the arrow keys, the page-up or page-down keys. I experimented, and in fact not one single key on the keyboard is active -- except the Escape key, which dumps you *completely* out of the program.

Moreover, each new screen of text appears via an animated "wipe" from the center outward. Not a scroll downward, which would make more sense -- or better yet, just a fresh screen. The transition takes only a half-second but after a while it is really tedious, since it is so utterly unnecessary. Somebody should have told the animator "No!" when they saw that device in the design specs.

I wish I could put a screen shot here, but try to imagine a multimedia program that would have been state-of-the-art back around 1995 or so.

I received package today. The only product that wasn't sealed was the Chemistry CD. Upon examining the CD I noticed that it was used instead of new and had deep scratches and evidence of previous usage. I just don't know what to say that is good about the condition. I guess you could say, "You get what you pay for when it's cheap". If you are going to purchase any of the learning products I suggest not buying this because it may be used instead of new, depends on your needs.

I bought this software because it apparently had lessons as well as quizzes in it and it was only five bucks, so I felt I could spare it even if the product wasn't great. My reasoning for buying it was I had previously gotten a D in a Chem course and am planning to retake it in the Fall. I felt completely lost in the course, hated the text book, and just had a rough time grasping concepts. (Usually by the time I "got it" was after I had already taken the test for that unit). So basically my intent was to buy something I could use to start learning now and get a jump start on this for the Fall.

I will upfront say this is very dated software. It reminds me of something you'd be using in the late 90's that would seem cutting edge then. The animations are annoying and slightly time consuming; so be patient. Also the program refuses to work in a windowed mode but also only a portion of your screen is the "game" so to speak. It's just a tiny box and the rest is black. So if you are going to be doing anything else in another window be ready to hit that windows key over and over. Also the navigation on the program is confusing and a lot of the (giant, might I add) buttons don't explain what they do. The only button on the keyboard that does anything, aside from the windows key, is the Esc button which closes the program entirely in most parts of it. However during quizzes I have to close the program by hitting the windows key and right clicking the software's lower screen tab and closing it that way. What a pain.

There is also the issue of it not having a typical scroll feature on the lessons; instead you have to click a Navigation button to scroll to the next section.

But, is the program worth it? Well to me it is.

I was hesitant about ordering this software, as there are no other reviews on it. However, as I am taking a chemistry class for the first time in years, I need all the help I can get. Plus, for less than $5.00, what have I got to lose?

I ordered this with the expectation that it might be useful at some point during the course of my class. This program exceeded my expectations. It is surprisingly in depth, covering 23 chapters/subjects worth of material all the way from "day one" chemistry basics up to (briefly) covering nuclear and organic chemistry. I am running Vista 64 bit and it installed and ran without any issues. I will definitely use this program during my entire chemistry course. I would also recommend the Homework Helpers for Chemistry book. Using that, with this program, will certainly have a positive impact on your grades. Ted Bell recommends it!
