1. It arrived with a badly rusted inner chuck.
2. The square tang socket is four very small grooves in a circular hole and do not hold the square tang well.
3. The rachet gears are exposed where they can collect debris and there is no way to lubricate the hidden rachet shaft.

I've had this brace for a year and while it's worked for me I don't believe it was worth the cost. I'm not saying it's poorly made. It is actually quite sturdy and beefy. But I've used Stanley braces that are $25.00 cheaper and they are just as good if not better. On the whole it is a quality tool just a little pricey.

There are still plenty of reasons for wanting un-powered tools. In my case, the reason was a small child, eager to learn tool usage but not big enough to manage even cordless power tools safely. This tool fits the bill perfectly. It can't run away from a little girl's strength, but it's a real tool that does real work. Best of all, it's sturdy enough to stand up to the eager misuse and loving abuse that kids' first tools inevitably suffer.

The must-have feature that sold me on this tool is the three-jaw chuck. Hex shanks predominate in today's drill bits. I wanted the child to be able to use the most common bits on the market, and I wanted her bits to remain usable when she graduates to power tools. One or the other of those wants would have gone unmet by braces designed for traditional tapered square shanks. (The description claims compatibility with square shanks, but I haven't tested that.)

I grumbled a bit about sticker shock. I grumbled a bit less when I felt the sturdy construction and smooth bearings. Good tools cost money, and this is a great one. In the unlikely event that it gets reasonably good care, it should her last a lifetime.

I bought this tool, over other hand braces, specifically because of the 3 jaw chuck. I though it would grip drill bits as securely as my power drill. I was wrong. The chuck is flimsy and cheaply made. It will not hold drill bits without allowing them to wobble. I expected more for the price. I suspect that this tool is meant ONLY for long shanked auger bits. If you're looking for a "cordless" drill that will accept standard drill bits (round or hex), buy an old, used Stanley 2101 or 2101A for half the price, take it apart, clean the goop out of the ratchet, and voila, you've got something that blows this hand brace out of the water. Two stars mainly because Amazon made the return process as painless as possible.

Thought that the high price would insure the quality that I needed for the job. Purposely purchased it to bore holes in some railroad ties. I can drive the auger into the tie but when you reverse the rachet to back out of the hole, the chuck always loosens up and come off the auger. Net result is that the auger is stuck in the railroad tie. Don't buy it.

This is a nice fairly heavy brace and bit. The chuck doesn't grip smaller round bits all that well. I would recommend using a hex base or other ground base drill. Aside from that what's not to like?

When you attempt to reverse it, the chuck comes loose. Worst design I have ever seen. Can I get my money back?
