Format: Audio CD
I am writing this review for those who have started to explore Nurse with Wound but aren't sure whether this album is any good. NWW has a vast discography, only a small subset of which is readily available on CD. And of those, this is one of the ones that doesn't seem to get talked about much. I bought it on a whim, but was a little afraid that it was either not great, or purely ambient.

So far, I have this album, Homotopy to Marie and Spiral Insana. In terms of accessibility, this probably ranks after Spiral but before HTM. Much of the album is made up of layered sound effects without any clear rhythm, but I wouldn't classify it as ambient music. Stapleton is able to retain some momentum or even a narrative to the pieces without using any of the conventional means.

Throughout the album, atmospheric sections are interspersed with portions of more conventional instrumentation or dialogue layered with swathes of feedback or electronic bleeps. The variety of sounds and textures keeps thing from getting boring, yet somehow the songs never feel random despite the unpredictability.

As someone who occasionally subjects himself to difficult listening experiences because of the novelty of their concept, I have been pleasantly surprised to learn that NWW isn't really one of those bands. Stapleton is talented enough to make experimental and unconventional music seem natural. To enjoy this, all that is required is a childlike love of sounds.

If sound existed in space, this is what it would sound like.

It makes me think of some unknown amphitheater in the middle of nowhere, while you watch random lights flicker in the distance while hearing this music. It's quite experimental, droney, and often hypnotic. Sometimes the random inserts of a maniacal laugh, laser beams, or a randomly plucked african instrument can be disenchanting, but overall I would say it a rather good ambient body of work.

There are almost twenty tracks on this record, which make for a good lulling sound as you lay in bed contemplating or falling asleep. I'd compare this to Set Fire to Flames' records or even Trent Reznor's work for the original Quake soundtrack. A good buy.
