Good quality scraper

I bought this scraper specifically to scrape hard water deposits off my pool tile. Here in the West, we have hard water which leaves a difficult to remove scale all around the pool.

Initially, I tried the typical window scraper with the rectangular blades. As you might know, these blades are quite thin. What I found was that the blades were not rigid enough to cut through the hard water deposits, the blades just flexed and rode over the top of the scale.

I found that the more rigid utility knife blades, as used in this Hyde Scraper, are a lot stiffer and will therefore cut through the scale. So, this scraper will work on heavier duty applications, and still use replaceable blades.

Two comments specifically about this product: 1. It is made entirely of plastic, so it's OK but it does flex under heavy scraping. I'd prefer an all metal version, but I couldn't find one. 2. The knife blades are not generic - most standard blades won't fit this scraper. These blades have a square hole in them, which fits into a square plastic peg molded into the black blade holder. The black part is what advances and retracts the blade, and the cutout/peg are necessary for this function. You can't fit a blade in this without the square hole.

Cheaply made garbage - do not buy!

If you try to use this to scrape anything that requires more than a medium amount of pressure on the blade, the blade just pushes back into the handle. The only thing holding the blade out in the scraping position is a piece of easily-bent plastic. So you wind up pressing your thumb really hard on the plastic 'nub' to try to keep the blade from pushing back and you wind up chewing up the skin on your thumb. And your palm gets sore 'cause, since your thumb has to hold the plastic nub against the side of the blade, you can't get a good grip on the handle so you have to put the butt end against your palm to apply any kind of force. You'd get more scraping done with less physical damage if you just use your fingernails instead of this piece of cr*p. For $9 it is completely unacceptable that it's so cheaply & poorly made and that the blade is "held" by just a tiny piece of flexible plastic. Don't buy it.

It's just ok. The slide seems to get stuck half the time and I'm forced to make sure the blades not getting hinged on something. And if you get it wet, the blade gets stuck coming out. Its not as simple as it's made to seem. I wont buy it again.

Great price, the whole thing is made out of plastic but so far it has been working great! I use it to clean the mirror on my wood stove. I've used it about 5 times and haven't had any issues. I put a lot of pressure on it because I scrape the smoke build up on the mirror - hasn't snapped yet.
