I got one of these from armynavysales.com and they are so great. I just have it pinned to the straps on my backpack so I can glace down at it whenever. I've matched it up against my other compasses and it makes me wonder, why aren't all compasses this one?

The Coghlan's Pin On Compass works smoothly and consistently. I've used
dial-type compasses for decades, and the needle often sticks in an incorrect
position because the compass body is not exactly parallel to the ground when
the reading is taken. The pin-on type contains a ball that floats freely no
matter how you view it. The reading is always true. The Coughlan pin-on
compass is quality piece of equuipment that could, in an emergency, prove to
be a life-saver.

I love these little clip-ons...they've saved me more than once when I became "spun around" in the woods. More consistent and reliable, in my opinion, than "flat", lensatic varieties. You don't have to tilt/jiggle these like you do on other models to ensure that they're not "hung up" or "stuck" in the wrong direction. A permanent part of my outdoors gear and in my vehicle.

I have used these on 3 different trips to Europe & in the woods behind my house.
It works. It's cheap and it's reliable.
One of these and a map and you'll never be lost.

Only disadvantage is that it is small and is easily misplaced. And without the Pin it rolls away and says Bye Bye.

However I replaced the Pin with a necklace lanyard. It doesn't roll away anymore, doesn't get lost and I can hang it around my neck.
I actually keep two in my travel bag in case one breaks or is lost. They are cheap enough so why not?

By the way. I found them cheaper at Walmart

I keep this attached to the backpack strap on my day pack. It is useful when I am doing photography and want to keep notes on which direction I was pointing or to what direction I'm looking at a vista. I try to do writeups of each of my trips, so this has been helpful for me keeping notes on which directions trails go or vistas point. Recommended!

FYI, though, you might be able to find it cheaper sometimes at a local sporting goods store or target.
