Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The directorial debut of award-winning playwright Philip Kan Gotanda, whose works include "The Wash," "Ballad of Yachiyo," "Sisters Matsumoto," and "Manzanar: An American Story." A quirky tale that brings together a murder, poison mushrooms and a mysterious woman to reveal the ephemeral beauty of life and the unforgiving nature of death. It is the story of a rogue mobster who finds love in the darkest days of his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent blend of noir and modern Asian American drama, May 2, 2007
It was a treat to finally be able to see this film, as I had met Ms. Julia Nickson during a screenwriting seminar. I believe this was the film she was talking about.

Kelvin Han Yee excels in the portrayal of a hard-nosed, slack jawed cop investigating the death of a man who may very well be a mob informant. But it isn't a crime drama as such, as the main character Harry (Sab Shimono) is determined to make things right with his children (Tamlyn Tomita and Greg Watanabe.)

Adding a little twist to this story is Julia Nickson, who is wonderful as a widow who isn't all there because of the tragedy that had occurred in Harry's current apartment. Director and playwright Philip Gotanda makes his trademark use of the simple (wild mushrooms in this case) to symbolize the value of life and the certainty of death.

I highly recommend this film for all audiences regardless of race.
