Product Description

This story was inspired by a high-end bar/restaurant near where I live. It is located at this surreal convergence of an Interstate exit, abandoned industrial structures, highway overpasses above a freight rail yard with a collection of industrial waste drums, tenement housing, and swaths of parking for a nearby hospital. Originally titled, The Ugliest Intersection in America, I sought to juxtapose the swank of the restaurant and its patrons with the toxic surroundings.

About the Author

Jason Makansi's short stories have appeared in Rainbow Curve; Big Muddy: A Journal of the Mississippi River Valley, published by Southeast Missouri State University; Marginalia, published by Western State College of Colorado; and Mizna: Prose, Poetry, and Art Exploring Arab America. He is a Syrian-Greek all-American who grew up in Wilmington, DE, and Signal Mountain, TN (near Chattanooga), and then fled to New York City for college (Columbia University). For the next 23 years, he lived and worked in and around NYC. Although he is a chemical engineer by education, he has been infatuated with, and pursued, writing ever since he “wrote and published” a family newspaper when he was 12 (it lasted three issues. he recalls). He's resided in the city of St. Louis for the last ten years with his wife (and business partner), his two daughters, and two dogs. By day, he is an electricity industry technology and management consultant. He wrote poetry in the 1980s, an environmental and energy newsletter in the 1990s, and he was the Chief Editor for Power magazine from 1994 to 2000 and with the publication since 1981. He claims to have visited more power plants worldwide than anyone else on the planet (he has been challenged on this only once). Lately, he is a member of an ad hoc fiction writers group, which meets weekly for commentary, food, coffee, and booze (maybe not in that order), and is active at the Zoetrope on-line writers workshop.
