Excellent hardware - Excellent installation support - Poor operation characteristics, December 16, 2008
One of the reasons I purchased this device is that it is a Xerox.
The machine itself is good quality. The chassis is heavy, and, the glass, feeder, document trays, etc., are all of reasonably good quality.
One of the real plusses to buying Xerox is that a real, English speaking human being answers the phone when you have a technical question. Their technical support is excellent (compared to other manufacturers like HP). This alone makes it worth the while to purchase Xerox.
I had a problem installing the TWAIN driver for this. In a half an hour I had a knowledgable technician on the line through their 800 number. The problem was resolved in ten to twenty minutes with proper support documentation and downloads available on line.
Why only 3 stars? This is one of the most difficult MFP devices (I have four of them) I have had to operate. It is not as difficult as an HP, but, it is, like an HP, so touchy as to require constant paper unjamming, constant references to the manual for error codes, constant power downs to reboot to get it out of indecipherable things it doesn't like about the ink supply, or the paper supply, or the paper adjustment, or the hundreds of software switches necessary to get it to print.
Like many devices out there, this one has no mercy on the user. If you don't do everything exactly right, you will end up either spending hours with the manual trying to figure out the error codes and how to fix it, or, you will spend 5 minutes per task powering it down to clear the error codes and get it back to step one so you can use it. Five minutes of powering down and powering back up just to make a copy is grossly unacceptable in any office.
THANK GOD it has an on off switch so that you can back out of its many, many, many error situations.
The printing quality was excellent, but, on envelopes, it so badly creased the envelopes running it through the rollers that we couldn't use it for printing envelopes as they looked too beat up after being through the machine for ordinary printing.
After about a year of very, very light use, the machine displayed a "service call" error message and completely stopped functioning.
Just try to find someone to fix one of these. There isn't anyone qualified, and, often the parts and labor can be as much as a new machine itself.
It is now a throwaway sitting in my office because we can't get anyone to fix it.
MANY bucks down the drain.
Nevertheless, because of the technical support I bought another Xerox 6180 MFP and, keep your fingers crossed, so far it is working fine.
I would stay away from this model because of its unreliability, counter-intuitive operating procedures, and, the incredible rarity of people who can fix it.

Problems Problems Problems, May 28, 2009
We purchased the Xerox 6115MFP less than a year ago.
Frankly, I would have loved to keep this printer forever even if it was just for the color prints and quality of the printing. Alas- paper jamming (and paper misfeed warnings)was the game of this printer. After having to open the machine up, take out and replace the paper from the feed and checking setting countless of times -- a permanent error message went onto the screen only to make the printer fully non-functional.
Luckily, we had registered the product warranty information - and after a trip our boonies college town by a Qualified Technician, he mentioned that the problem was an error due to Humitity (did I mention that this is in Maine in February? When its 10 below? Lets just say humidity in the winter is NOT a problem here!) He "fixed" that problem, and after returning a day later with parts - he pronounced it "fixed" completely. This time.
After 5 or 6 more times coming to our fabulous 30-minutes-to-see-a-movie-town in less than 2 months, we were awarded with a replacement (6180MFP).
We have just started to set it up - already I can tell the machine is much faster on copies and faxes in the printing session - and I am hoping madly that it prints fabulously as well.
The replacement toner cartridges are - of course - even MORE expensive than the other, but what can you do?
So - I can't totally reccomend the new machine we have recieved, but I can say it HAS to be better than the original machine we had! Please beware of purchasing!
