Update March 1, 2011
While researching the part I found conflicting information on the web concerning lubrication of the screw drive assembly; some sources indicated the screw itself should be lubricated to facilitate the operation of the rack and others omitted such references. I decided to call Chamberlain and was told the rail, not the screw, could be very lightly lubricated every 12 inches to facilitate operation of the trolley. They specifically said the rail and not the screw and emphasized the minimal use of lubricant.

Original review
We have always appreciated the convenience offered by a garage door opener so when it made a really loud racket and stopped working we were definitely concerned.

Being something of a do-it-yourselfer I started researching the LiftMaster screw operated garage door opener and soon discovered the weak spot in the design; the infamous screw drive carriage rack. It took a little research to find the exact name of the part but the web came to my aid again.

After I discovered its real name which is screw drive carriage rack and checked Amazon sure enough they had that part. I placed an order with Amazon but the part must have gotten lost somewhere because it never came in. Amazon refunded my money and suggested one of the other suppliers so I chose U.S. Door Control who did a stellar job of getting the part to me well ahead of schedule.

It was then up to me to install the rack; being one of those who always read the instructions I wanted to see if I could find anything on the web that would give me a step-by-step guide to how best to do this.

good replacement part, shipping a bit slow,... easy to follow instructions (but the Door Opener or replacement manufacturer really shall use some stronger materials such as nylon, etc other than plastic to be driven by the metal screw).

11/5/2012 update - The above review was created for my March 13, 2012 purchase. The replacement rack failed today - after just less than 7 months. The teeth got worn out by the metal screw drive (the original part lasted for several years). I'm ordering another two now - one for the immediate replacement, and the other as a back up because the estimated delivery date is 11/9 - 11/16 (i.e., 4 to 11 days after the order is placed - although Amazon said "Standard Shipping" for 3-5 days prior to finalizing my order). The other reviewer said the seller charges the same shipping cost if you order two. It's no longer the case. The shipping is charged per item now.

I noticed that now it's sold by a different vendor, will see if it comes from the same or a different manufacturer with the same or better quality,...

For the poor rack material and recurring efforts in such a short time, I'm lowering my rating to 2 stars (from the previous 4 stars).

As noted this part should have been made of metal. Since it's not and made of plastic I'm on my 3rd one. I am so tired of reengineering someone else's crappy work! I connected two of these together with threaded rod hoping to buy some more time before I have to do it again. I'll repost when it fails. I would say to be sure your door is properly balanced or it will just aggreviate the problem. At least I got it quickly.

If your metal screw has worn the plastic screw drive carriage rack teeth down to little nubs - this is exactly the part you need. I bought three because I know that they will wear down over time and I'll be replacing it again. Look online for great step by step instructions at chamberlain.com (then Support, then Instruction Manuals, put in your model number and off you go) on how you get this little part into the metal channel that needs to fit into. It's not intuitive (at least it wasn't for me)...

After installing - you will probably need to play with the settings on the opener to set the closed/opened height and closing pressure. In my case - the failure of the old carriage rack really gave my opener mechanism a false sense of "where the garage door was" so i had to fiddle with the settings and pressure to get it back to normal. Just be patient and have someone else pushing the open/close button while you make adjustments.

Garage door opener "Rack" received is EXACTLY like the original rack. Original Chamberlain rack lasted 8 1/2 years of use before needing replacement. (I believe proper "balancing of door" determines how long the "Rack" will last.) New rack appears to be made of the same material as the original which is some sort/type of plastic. It should hold up as well as the original. For replacement instructions use Google - Search for Chamberlain Support, and input "Rack Replacement" as other reviewers have posted.

Rack was needed when it (Rack) would move up/down rail ONLY when disconnected from Trolley/Door. Loud grinding noise made when door was reconnected to Rack via the trolley.

Note that as Amazon changes suppliers, my "Rack" was from North Shore Commercial Door, Inc. The listing also was ID as "Liftmaster 81C168 Garage Door Screw Drive Carriage Rack - by Chamberlain". (Because it said "by Chamberlain" I had confidence it would be like the original rack.) IF it fails early I will be sure to update this post.

UPDATE MARCH 2014
My replacement "Rack" reviewed above lasted aprox 9 months. The replacement appears in EVERY way to be exactly like the original which lasted many years. I am in process of trying to determine why it did not last longer. I would replace the entire screw drive just to rule that out - but everywhere I looked indicated that part is no longer available. It may be that the operation of my door is just as not smooth as it should be. Originally I bought 3 each racks (I have 2 doors) and am now using one of those which seems to work fine -- will see how long it lasts.

UPDATE 2 April 2014
Since just last month (March) I replaced all the rollers which helped smooth out the operation of the door.
