I first found this LP in a K-Mart near Detroit about 1976. It looked interesting and its low price was nice so I bought it. I used to by stuff that I had never heard and was often disappointed but this LP soon became one of my favorite spins. I used to haunt Record stores around the Mid-West but never saw it anywhere. Recently I was searching Amazon and typed in "Rumplestiltskin" just to see what would come up and almost fell out of my chair when I saw the cover, as soon as I pulled myself back up I immediatly ordered it. There are several very good tracks but it may not be to everyones liking. Sample tracks would be helpful to those who are interested but unfamiliar with this CD.

RUMPLESTILTSKIN WAS RELEASED IN 1970 AND AFTER JUST A SHORT TIME IT LANDED IN THE DELETE BINS!!WHY?...I SUGGEST THAT THE CARTOON COVER AND THE NAME THREW MUSIC BUYER'S OFF.WHAT THEY MISSED IS A TRUE HIDDEN GEM AND I AM GLAD IT IS AVAILABLE ON C D.ALAN HACKSHAW WAS ONE OF THE MAIN PLAYERS IN THE GROUP AND ONCE YOU HEAR "MR.JOE" YOU ARE HOOKED ON THIS BAND'S UNIQUE SOUND.THE GROUP WENT BACK INTO THE STUDIO AND PRODUCED ONE OTHER RELEASE BEFORE CALLING IT A DAY....THIS IS A VERY GOOD C.D!!!

You would be mistaken, wonderfully, if you bought this thinking it was a great lost blaxploitation album. Never judge a book by its cover, and apply the same caveat to music.

Rumplestiltskin is actually a fantastic blues/progressive rock album from 1970; a band of English session players like Herbie Flowers and Clem Catanni, performing under pseudonyms. Mix growling guitar riffs--rumor is this is Jimmy Page, who played sessions with Rumplestiltskins producer Shal Tammy--with winding prog essays. Add soul-ish vocals from Peter Lee Green, and you have one hell of a musical cocktail.

What makes this album work so well is the care taken in welding the different styles together. A killer axe riff evolves seamlessly into a mesh of electric piano webs, then into vocal highlights that could be from a 1970 R&B single.

If this all sounds like early art-rock indulgence, a listen will prove this notion wrong. This is not the half-baked, cut-the-tape-loop mess of B-grade dawn of the 1970's rock, but a complex, perfectly planned synergy of styles, all fleshed for maximum impact. Art-rock that actually rocks.

Perhaps this wound up in cut out pins because no one could pin Rumplesstitskin down. Even in the genre ignoring world of early-1970's rock, it was not easy to find an album that touched so many bases so fully, and so well.

One of the most under-rated albums of the 70's...A lost gem of bluesey rock and roll with some of the best keyboard and bass playing you'll ever hear..

I also bought this from a 99 cent bin in a dept store. I was blown away! Havn't heard anything like it since. 44 yrs later, still one of my frequent spins. Haunting vocals, incredible electric piano / keyboard, not to leave out the great bass lines and guitar. One of my top 10 all time.
