Perfect for our baby, April 29, 2007
My wife and I borrowed an Evenflo Snugli packpack from a friend for a trip abroad when our baby was about nine months old. My wife was sceptical about the pack, and would have frowned on our buying one at the time. The thing proved itself to be great; we were tramping through small cities in deep snow with no trouble, where a stroller would have been impossible, and our baby loved it. The view from the pack is much better than from a stroller, where she sees mostly people's knees.
We considered buying the same model when we returned, but decided on the more expensive Deuter Kid Carrier II instead, reasoning that it would be better to have storage space split into smaller units for organization, and that the more adjustable Deuter would ultimately be more comfortable.
It certainly is comfortable for both me and our daughter. She fell asleep in it (again) today, as I marched through midtown. The backpack is much more convenient than any stroller when using public transit; it is no delay when going down subway steps or getting on a bus. When our daughter gets bored, she calls for me to "bounce," and I can shake her up and down by bending and straightening my knees repeatedly, leaving her soon breathless with glee and laughter.
Deuter makes a fancier model with a built-in sun and rain shade. I prefer to have this separate, so I can leave it at home if the weather doesn't demand my carrying it around.
I was wrong, by the way, about the desirability of divided storage space. In hindsight, I would have preferred a single, large compartment. This is a small disadvantage.

The Best Backpack Carrier, June 25, 2007
We got this for our son once the Baby Bjorn became uncomfortable due to his weight. We've used it so much I don't know what we'd do without it. We've used it on walks around our neighborhood, fairly strenuous hikes, walks around a ski village while it was snowing (the sun/rain cover worked great to keep the snow off our little guy - he was able to hang out in his little dry world and watch his first snow!), and walks around downtown. I still love my stroller for exercise and in times when I know I'll be shopping and want storage space but this carrier makes it so much easier to navigate crowds and stairs. I can imagine that it would be great for airline travel but we haven't had the opportunity to use it for that yet.
It adapts great to whatever we want to do. There is plenty of space for a few diapers, wipes, additional clothing, food, sippy cup, camera, mom and dads' wallets, you name it but the carrier isn't too huge. The sun/rain cover is great. It stores easily in one of the back pockets and when in use keeps the sun off his face but has nice ventilation holes so he doesn't get too hot. Also, the rain cover is stowed in the small pocket in the sun cover and is easy to remove and place over the sun cover when needed.
We also looked at the Kelty but decided that this pack was much more confortable. Deuter is the best!

Nothing else compares!, June 18, 2009
If you took all the good things about all the other kid-carrying backpacks and put them into one pack, it would be this one. I spent so very many hours researching these things before we made the big purchase. We live in Salt Lake, a hiker's paradise, and these backpacks are no small decision--comfort is a big deal and so is convenience. In all of my product research, I couldn't find another pack that has all the features that were important to me: storage (plenty of it and it's great), good reviews, comfort for the child, comfort for the adult, easy adjustability for two adults, a built-in water reservoir, and a reasonable sunshade. What is up with Kelty blocking the kid's view with that ridiculous shade??? I don't know about the rest of you but I take my kid into the mountains so she can see and appreciate nature.
We have also used this in DC and Manhattan and the previous reviewer was right--this is WAY better on the streets and on the subway than a stroller. We know. We tried the stroller thing on a different trip.
Anyway, my daughter has been riding in this since she was about eight months old and she's now two. We couldn't love it anymore. Oh, and everywhere I go I get compliments on it and people ask where I got it. That's because REI only carries Kelty and...well, REI brand.
