I bought this tool to crimp Ancor marine connectors, figuring it should be perfect, and it is. The ratcheting makes it easy to get secure crimps and the size selection covered all my needs. One reviewer mentioned that there is no release mechanism if you want to abandon a crimp, but in fact there is a release lever to do exactly that. It's not mentioned in the instructions but is on the tool.Overall, excellent tool. It might be a little large to fit in very tight spaces, but I think that will be true of any ratcheting double crimp tool.

A tool of this type is just about essential for doing quality crimps. It is very sturdy and unlikely to break under even the hardest of use. Once you've squeezed the handle all the way home, you've created a crimp that is unlikely to fail.

However, it is not the perfect tool. First, although the tool 'ratchets,' that only means it will hold its place should you ease your grip. You can't make it close by repeatedly squeezing. Does this matter? Yes, if you're working in a confined space (like a boat). With the jaw wide open as you're approaching the connector it is quite bulky and can be hard to maneuver.

Second, there is no way to get it to release once you've started. Once the ratchet engages, you're committed! If the tool isn't in the correct place, too bad, you're going to ruin an expensive connector.

Still, all of these ratcheting crimpers have similar limitations. This one is at least very sturdy and makes reliable, high-quality crimps.

I just made a crimp using a small loop of wire and a butt connector. I had a couple of people try and pull the loop apart and no one was able to do so. This is a dramatic change from the poor quality crimps I was getting using my non-ratcheting channel lock crimp tool. Spend the cash and get the right tool for the job.

I am not sure if it is the tool design or the one I got, but:

The dies that came with mine cannot be installed the way that it shows on the package. The part of the die that is intended to press on the connector to crimp it should be on the moving jaw, according to the manufacturer's diagram and photos of other people's. In order to do this, the die label and dots had to be faced towards the opposite side. Also, the die writing on mine is upside-down. Are these even real Ancor dies?

Also, the first time I tried to use it, I did not think to check it closely first - it was set for worn dies (not new ones) and I nearly couldn't get the thing open again, which comes to my next point - the release lever only works well if there is no pressure on the handles. If you are close to completing a crimp, you have to finish as the release lever will be too inaccessible and too firm to move. By the way, nowhere in the instructions and nowhere on Marinco's web site does it even mention the control to set the crimp pressure (you remove the little screw and turn towards the negative symbol to keep the jaws a little more open, towards the positive symbol to make them closer together, then replace the screw).

I am not a weenie, but this is really hard to close - my other crimper (not for the same kind of crimps) is smooth and easy to operate, and it crimps great (I checked).

Also, I have tested and tested this and cannot get it to crimp without cutting through the insulation on Ancor double crimp nylon insulated ring terminals for 12-10 wire (using 12 AWG wire), and yes, I'm putting it in the right spot and facing it the right way.

I've probably made 800 crimps or so with this tool and every single one of them was as perfect and easy as the first. Tool makes clean tight crimps every time. It's a little pricey for a crimper but worth the price.

Nice crimper. Haven't had a bad crimp yet. Much better than those cheap single crimpers. I read about how tough it is to crimp. It's really true. It takes some force to complete the crimp. I'm also used to higher quality crimpers where the terminals or splices are held in place to crimp. This one takes a little more work to hold the splices and make the crimp. Overall I'm very satisfied in the quality of crimper and the price.

Works great. Use heat shrink connectors and get a solid crimp and water tight connection to protect you wiring from salt water (you still need a heat gun). As good as soldering connections and then heat shrinking adhesive lined sleeves but it is 5 times faster!

As they say, Good crimp tools are expensive, bad crimp tools are MORE EXPENSIVE

I have been putting together a wiring harness for a motorcycle and these are very handy. They work much better than the cheaper variants made of two pieces of stamped steel. Easier on the hand if you are doing a large number of crimps. The construction of the tool seems very sturdy. The crimps they make on uncoated metal crimps seem very sturdy (they pass the pull test, and haven't rattled apart after thousands of miles in an engine bay). Only downside I've encountered is that I'm not sure if you can replace the sizing portion on the jaws of the crimp tool. If you need to crimp wire smaller than 18 gauge, or crimp small pins on connectors etc, these crimps may be too large for you. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase after owning them for a 1/2 year and performing hundreds of crimp connections.
