Solid for the first dozen strikes... then it broke... Update: Then it was replaced.

I purchased this mallet for a woodworking project in which I needed to drive wooden dowels through a tight hole. The metal hammer/wood piece buffer solution wasn't working well and was getting splinters everywhere. The first set of strikes with the hammer landed solidly and drove the dowels in easily. However, after a dozen strikes or so (first day of use), the handle broke about an inch below the head. Perhaps there was a weak spot in the handle? I can't imagine this is representative behavior given all the good reviews I saw here. Regardless, I'm returning it and will be looking for a sturdier mallet.

Update: TEKTON contacted me very soon after I left this review offering to replace my broken mallet free-of-charge. I accepted and it showed up a day later. I used it quite a bit today (albeit gingerly since I didn't want it to break again). I bumped the review up a star for the good faith TEKTON has shown. If the mallet survives a while longer, I will come back and perhaps raise the rating further.

Immediately Fell Apart

I was stunned at how poorly made this mallet is. Rubber mallets are supposed to be tough. The first time I used this (banging lightly on the handle of a socket wrench secured to a stuck bolt), it immediately began disintegrating. Every time I bang on something, it falls apart more. This is the most poorly made mallet I've ever used. Don't buy it.

8/22/15 Update: While using the remnants of this mallet to bang some post foundations into the ground, the handle snapped in two. Worst tool I've ever used.

The hammer head is bigger than you would think from the photos. It is very cheap so I wasn't expecting much and so I was not disappointed even when pieces of it started to crumble off after a while. If you need something for just a few light projects this will do, but don't expect it to last very long or withstand much heavy use. For general use where you don't need quite so much weight though, like assembling furniture, I'd recommend something about half the weight. The odour does go away after a while.

Good mallet

This is a nice big, sturdy, heavy duty mallet. I full time in my RV and use it to help hook up my tow car and with other jobs that require more strength than I can produce on my own. Every woman should have one of these!

Damned good tool!

Toxic Smell, But Big and Sturdy

I use this for home applications and I need to store it in my garage. But man, I can't get over the toxic stench the rubber on the mallet gives off. It smacks me in the face everytime I entered my garage so now it sits outside behind my trees. I would not buy this again b/c the stench is overwhelming. But its a big, sturdy mallet.

Too big???

Never really considered how heavy 32oz was until I received this mallet. Does the job, however I'm always concerned that the weight of the mallet will cause the handle to break off when I swing it. Overall I do like it, however a lighter weight mallet would do the same job, and would feel sturdier.

I had spent much more---like 40$ on a similar product from a "tool truck" (a red and white one) and when I had a big chunk of the hammer face missing and tired to get warranty, I thought I was talking in a foreign language to the dealer because they certainly didn't understand what I was talking about and didn't warranty it either.
