It was getting impossible for me to unlock the driver's side door on my 1997 Ford Explorer. I decided to take the plunge and replace the latch. I followed the 18 step instructions at: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170619
The 1997 Ford Explorer has a different electrical connector than one supplied, but that's not a problem, as you swap the part that the wire connects to, to the new latch. The other connector fits just fine. It took me 2 hours to replace the part, as I took my time when taking off the five rods, outside door handle, inside door handle, key lock rod, push button rod, and the electronic door locking mechanism. As I took off each one, I placed them on the new latch, so that I wouldn't forget how they went. Try to remember how the hook into the latch and you'll be fine.
The results are great, everything works like brand new. I should have replaced the latch two years ago!

I thought since it was so much less expensive than from Ford directly it may be used or an aftermarket part but it came still prewrapped in the Genuine Ford package. Installed and works great!
