I found out about Mercon-V ATF and power steering fluid when I put a rebuilt power steering pump in my Crown Vic. Its a dual use fluid with a wide temperature range, great lubrication and anti-oxidation properties. It is also dyed red to make leak detection easier. I like the fact I can carry one fluid for both my automatic transmission and power steering. My power steering never worked as smooth as it does now. It costs more than the old stuff, but its worth it to me.

Both my 2005 E450 and 2011 F150 call for Mercon V in the power steering. Actually, the E450 calls for Mercon, and the 2011 calls for Mercon V, but seeing how Ford stopped manufacturing the Mercon, it is now OK to use Mercon V where Mercon was previously used (of course, when Mercon was still being produced, it was strongly urged that you DID NOT use Mercon V in its place - but you know how that works).

For the transmission, however, in the E450 it calls for Mercon SP, and in the F150 it calls for Mercon LV. Gotta keep it confusing.

So I bought five quarts to do a flush for the two power steering systems in the F150 and E450. Could I have purchased a Mercon / Mercon V substitute for half the price? Sure, for instance Walmart sells 5 quarts of Valvoline DexMerc for $17 - half the price of this juice. Why didn't I use the DexMerc? Could have - but this time I chose to stay with the OEM fluid, and use what the car was born with and has been breathing since birth.

For my needs, I have a bad habit of staying with the OEM fluids, and sometimes paying too much for something that could be substituted. Guess it gives me peace of mind that there wasn't some foreign / unknown ingredient in all of these substitutes out there that was going to mess something up...

It can be hard to find larger quantities of this fluid locally if you are doing a flush. Ordering it here comes out to just under 7 bucks a quart. Not much more than the dealers wanted and no driving around to find quantities. You can order up 20 quarts of this and not have to leave the house. I am also leery of aftermarket mercon V in an expensive transmission, so I don't mind buying the Motorcraft stuff for peace of mind.

Just the sacrifice needed to keep your Ford 4R70W or similar transmission happy. Replace every 30000-50000 miles, or as Our Dark Lord commands.

Seriously though, this is the right stuff. Don't accept cheap substitutes, use what it says on the transmission dipstick. Does it say "Mercon VI?" Does it say "Use generic auto parts store transmission oil"? No, it does not.

Items arrived as advertised and expected. Note that if you order 2 or more, they will come in the same box and be stickered "HEAVY"! They did not travel very well and the box was pretty much destroyed on arrival. The contents were okay however. Overall exactly what I needed for the job.

This is the only stuff I use in my Ranger. Manual calls for it so that's what I use. Lasts about 30k miles. I can tell that it gets worn as my trans starts shifting weirdly.. Price is good. Sometimes it's cheaper hear than dealer but either or, this is what I've been using for over 100k miles.

I put a remanufactured transmission in my F350 15000 miles ago and don't know what kind of fluid the shop put in it but when i changed the filter and used this fluid the truck never ran better. Genuine Ford fluid for a Ford truck is the only way to go. Thanks Amazon. Great fluid for a great price.
