A Japanese plant with striking white-green-pink foliage. Slender branches are always moving in the breeze. Regular shearing is necessary to maintain leaf variegation. Very popular in Europe and gaining momentum in U.S. Also can be trained into an unusual bonsai specimum.

4.0 out of 5 stars It came in good shape and seems to be doing well., May 25, 2009

It came as sort of a stubby little thing, but still healthy, green and variegated, so it shows great promise. Hirts has been a reliable source for quality, hard-to-find plants.

My one issue is with their packaging. I try to buy from local nurseries whenever possible, and turn to online buying only when I can't find what I need locally. I understand the environmental impacts of online buying and transport via fossil fuels. I try not to do it if I don't have to. To that end, I wish Hirts would switch to a biodegradable packaging medium in lieu of the Styrofoam packaging peanuts. The Styro has to go into the garbage, where I know it'll just sit forever in a landfill somewhere. There are so many better options that would get the plants here safely, and could then go into my worm bin to be digested into compost to keep the plants healthy and thriving. Shredded newspaper would be a cheap alternative.
An otherwise great company to work with, but I can't give the full five stars until they make the switch to something more responsible.
