** Disclaimer: I had posted this review and gotten a *lot* of hatemail, with some users, such as Casey914, stating the "... review to be utterly useless ...". I am puzzled at how this review could not be useful, and would appreciate any constructive suggestions (vs just pure hate) **

My usage scenario: A way to clearly and boldly label black plastic storage bins.

Factors important to me:
* ink: opacity/opaqueness and vibrance/saturation
* ease of priming
* writing smoothness
* ease of use; fluidity of the end-to-end scenario (overall fit and feel of the product)
* ease of erasing

Chalk makers tested:
1. Expo - Brightsticks
2. Chalk This Way - Liquid Chalk Ink Markers
3. Chalk Ink - Chalk Ink 6 mm Chalk Marker
4. SuperChalks - Color Liquid Chalk Marker
5. CraftyCroc - Chalk Markers

** Comparison of markers ink opaqueness and vibrance **
There was no discernible difference between the markers. Refer to the attached image to see what I mean. Furthermore, except for the Expo markers, it felt as if all the markers were made at the same factory. They were just so generic and common, nothing really set themselves apart (except for the Expo).

** Comparison: Ease of priming **
I quantified this with the number of "pumps" it took to start a new marker to start flowing. Here's the method I used in order to be somewhat consistent:
1. Shake marker 20 times
2. On a plastic card, plunge tip in and out 10 times
3. If ink does not flow, recap marker, and repeat #1 and #2.

1. Expo - Brightsticks: 30 pumps
2. Chalk This Way - Liquid Chalk Ink Markers: 200+ pumps. Failed to start.
3. Chalk Ink - Chalk Ink 6 mm Chalk Marker: 40 pumps.
4.

I got this pen to create signs for a friends wedding. It looks like chalk, but with a much sharper image. My friend created another sign using regular chalk and it was not a clear image like the pen. I did not use it for erasing purposes (the signs were thrown away after the party). I did, however, make a mistake when writing the signs. I wasn't paying attention, and drew a line through some of the letters I wrote. I found that if I let it dry for a moment, using a pencil eraser helped to erase areas I needed. A pencil eraser also helped with light touch up. I really liked this pen for what I used it for. I would recommend when first writing, writing on a separate item before starting. This is just in case the pen comes out with a big blob of ink. I used chalk board contact paper with this item.

Pro: cleans off chalkboard fine with just a little water; so i like that; Only thing i don't like is that it doesn't write very well unless it is pointing downward. So if the chalkboard is hanging -- takes a little effort to get it to write as well. However, when it does point downward (or by continuous shaking to the tip) it writes nice.

My husband claims we need labels on everything. On the outside of our cherry wood cabinets, on the fridge, everything! Our compromise was large glass jars on the counters for cereal and things like that, and on them, black chalk labels. I tried regular chalk, and one other brand of chalk markers, and none of them worked well. The regular chalk wiped off too easily, and the other chalk markers never wiped off. The Chalk Ink Marker 6mm Chalk White product was perfect. When I used it on the labels I just made sure to keep the jars flat (the labels were already attached) just to make sure they didn't run, but they look great. It took a lot of shaking in the beginning, just like the directions say, but after that were a piece of cake for precise nice lines. I also have a miniature chalkboard in our home for tiny quick messages, like Happy Holidays, and it worked perfectly. I didn't lay that down flat when it was drying, so I probably didn't need to worry about it running with the labels either. Would definitely recommend!

I first was hesitant about getting this chalk pen because of reviews about it not working very well on Chalk paint. Well I am here to clear that up. It works great if you follow the intructions on the chalkboard paint can. Paint a nice good coat, usually 2 to 3 coats will do just fine. Wait 4 days, then using normal chalk not the chalk pen condition the surface. I used normal chalk laid it over on its side and lightly covered the surface, this must sit for 3 days. Then you clean the surface off with a damp rag. Let the surface dry after cleaning for an hour. And bam chalk pen works like a charm. Goes on great comes off really easy.

I have tried a handful of liquid chalk markers, and Chalk Ink is the ONLY brand that gives you consistent, bold, opaque color. Many of the other brands available on Amazon are too watery, so the color is too light & streaky to read or it drips. Or the tips never fully saturate with color, so you're constantly shaking the pen, pressing in the tip, trying to write, repeat. The Chalk Ink markers keep their moisture and the color stays in the tip so it's ready when you need it next. I've tried other brands that dry up quickly. I wish the Chalk Ink markers were cheaper, but I guess you get what you pay for. Random: I noticed that my local Starbucks uses Chalk Ink on their menu boards also.
