By Dennis A. Garber on August 23, 2009
I got a $350 electric bill! -I know that many people would not find this to be a lot of money, but I am somewhat frugal by nature. Previous to the bill, I had blown-in more insulation, replaced all of my light bulbs with fluorescents & LED-s and LED floods on my motion detector lights outside, put in a more efficient condensing unit on my HVAC with the latest and enviro-friendly refrigerant. So I was now looking for something novel to help me to find further efficiencies and found radiant barriers.

Anyway, I did some research and came across this product. It seemed too good to be true, so I checked it out on the energy department website ([...]) and found that they can reduce thermal transfer by 16-42%(!!!)). Then I perused the tables in the studies and concluded that the installation would pay for itself, at least. -So I bought 2000 ft/sq and began installation and installed about 800 ft/sq in the heat of my passion. I also repaired my attic exhaust fan (but my house is fully ridge-vented as well). I also repaired a couple of small leaks in my ductwork. -Not the type of work I would recommend in FL in the summer..... So, what were the results?

My electric bill went from $350 to $250 with approximately the same weather.

Do I endorse the product? -Yes I do. All you have to do is experience is the 'shaded' feeling you get when the barrier is installed and you will know it works. It is like your roof being shaded by an umbrella, in effect. Is it fully responsible for the savings? Nope, but I will install the other 1200 ft/sq and see how much more savings it generates. If you live in a sun-drenched area like mine, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

But.

I bought two rolls of Radiant Guard, and a roll of enerflex from HD. The Radiant is stiff like real aluminum foil. The Enerflex is like weak mylar - it tears too easily. I think the radiant guard is a better product.

Here's a tip, if you are going to staple to the rafters, measure 2ft from one side of the roll, then using your knife, cut around the roll 2 feet of product. Then when you unroll the sheets, you'll have two 2ft wide even sheets to staple to the underside. If you cut after you unroll, it is harder to keep your cut line even with the knife.

I live in TX, and it gets hot. My shingles are black, so can Imagine how hot the roof and attic get.

I ordered 2 rolls - 1700 sq ft house - but really only needed one because I discovered that part of my roof is constantly in shade. So, I am essentially doing any roof that faces west.

The "foil" comes in a roll that is about 30 pounds. And at 4 feet wide, makes it very virtually impossible for one person to do. I had a buddy helping me and we discovered that 4-10 foot per cut sections work best.

This "foil" is thick, so it really does not kink or anything like that - looks to be of good quality.

As far as it helping with AC bills and lowering Attic temp, we shall see. <<update here>> So, in Texas we had a cracy HOT summer. something like 99 days over 100 and a week of 110 plus. This product did lower the temp in my attic. however, I cannot comment on my bills being lower, because thus summer was abnormally hot. normally my attic would be 120 on a 100 day. this year it was more like 110 on a 100 day.

However, note their return policy...kinda crappy

First they charge a 15% restocking fee. Kinda BS if you ask me. Another thing that you may want to be aware of is:
"You contact us for a Return Authorization (RA) number within 10 days of receipt of your item." - so make sure if you want to ship it back you so so pretty quickly!!!
