At the beginning, the price of this item was a large deterrent, but I figured this is something you only want to buy once. There are plastic alternatives at a fraction of the price, but they didn't give the impression they would stand up to the job. There are some major forces at work to stretch a boot, so an all-metal device seemed the logical option. I decided to make this a Christmas gift to my wife (but hey, guess who gets the job of doing the actual work), which helped overcome some of my reservations on the hefty price tag. I'd rather go for overkill than be disappointed by some flimsy apparatus that broke after a few weeks of use. And my wife has several pairs of expensive boots she can no longer wear in comfort (no honey, I'm sure it's the boots that have gotten smaller over the years), so it seemed like a wise investment.

If anything, the stretcher was even heavier and more robust than I'd expected. I've only tried it on a pair of synthetic boots so far, but it seems to have done the job well. Getting the boot onto the stretcher wasn't easy. My wife takes a size 6 1/2 shoe, and even at the smallest setting, getting the boot zipped up over the lower part of the stretcher took some effort. I also got it on the wrong way round to begin with, until I realised it was assymetrical at the heel, and that there's a right and wrong way to fit it. But once on, it worked well and tightening was self-explanatory - a good thing as it came with no instructions. There are upper and lower expanders, and the handle pulls up and down to engage into the different screws for each. You can't go too far at the top without expanding the lower crank a turn, otherwise you'll seize up the screw, but this wasn't a problem in use.

If you are going to stretch the shaft of a boot, you need something like this that is very heavy duty and can really exert some force on the leather and hold it there. I used this with the "Shoe Stretcher" spray from Kiwi on two pairs of tall boots I have that I love but couldn't wear because they were so dang tight in the calf. (I have muscular calves and I find this to be a problem often). It does not come with directions, so I did enlist the help of my husband who is somewhat more mechanically minded than I, and after three days it worked great! My boots now easily zip up, and if I kept stretching I could stretch them enough to wear over jeans. One note - the boots I used it on were real leather so I can't say if it would be good with synthetics. Also, I had to keep turning the crank about a 1/4 turn every day for 3-4 consecutive days to get the amount of stretch I needed.

I used to work with leather - cutting, stitching, carving, and detail work. Whenever you want to mold leather, you wet it, and it becomes more pliable. Allow it to dry and the molding is set. This is why this boot stretcher works. This boot stretcher is heavy and very well built. It did not come with instructions, so I was emailing back and forth with the seller, who could not forward an attachment to me because the seller said Amazon's policy wouldn't allow them to. Anyway, I finally figured out that the long, thin bolt with the tee handle slides down and fits (by twisting it correctly) or locks into the lower part of the unit, which then responds to the turns of the tee handle - either making it wider or more narrow (spreading-wise). Likewise, unlocking the bolt from the lower section (with the correct twist) and sliding the bolt straight upward as far as it needs to go to lock (with a twist) into the upper area of the device, will also respond to the turns of the tee handle and if you do a few turns to the upper, and return to the lower part and do a few turns there, then return to the upper part and continue, you can maximize how wide this device can spread. So, we stretched a leather boot 4 inches and used the spray agent to make the leather more pliable but I think water or mist would also work. But you can't just make the upper part really wide because the lower part also needs to be adjusted outward.

After I got the hang of this device, we were amazed! No more ill fitting boots for us. There are four females in this household who are boot lovers, and this device looks like it will last generations if used properly. Before purchasing this, my daughter spent $50 to have a pair of boots stretched. Highly recommended, but make sure you understand how to operate it properly.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I left the dampened leather boot on the stretcher for about two days. I think it just needs to dry to set the stretched leather.

I purchased a beautiful pair of tall Taryn Rose Boots. The shaft needed to be stretched about 2 inches. I stretched it from a 15" to 17" with no problem. I purchased this Cast Aluminum Shaft Stretcher and it really worked. I use stretching spray and left the shaft shretcher on for 48 hours. It really works. You have to purchase stretching spray to use along with this shaft stretcher. I am so glad I purchased this. I am sure I can use it on other boots that I buy since I have larger calves.

Once you figure how to work the thing, it is very effective. I have knee high leather boots that were tight at the calf and instep. This stretcher worked like a charm. Just note there is only 1 stretcher - so you have to strech one boot at a time. Money well spent. I will never have to deal with too tight calfs in my boots again:)
