I read about this in an herbalism book. The Greeks and Romans used it. It was apparently in every European household in the medieval. When herbalism was revived in the early 1900's, the focus was put on Eastern herbs and this herb was supposedly forgotten. Wood betony is supposedly up there with sage. Supposedly Westerners could trade a crate of sage leaves for three crates of tea leaves to Easterners on the silk road. Sage is such a powerful antioxidant, it was stored with meat to make it keep longer. Wood betony is supposed to nourish the solar plexus--which is the area of neurons located in the stomach. It sounds far fetched and new agey to consider that there are neurons located outside of your brain, but it is not a conspiracy. People get diarrhea from SSRI's because 90% of your serotonin receptors are in your stomach area--I've experienced this symptom first hand. The solar plexus affects all of kinds things. People with finicky stomachs often also suffer from mania. I found this idea revelatory. I have a more finicky stomach than anyone I have ever met and I also suffer from mania. This sounded like the herb for me. Wood betony also cures headaches. I used to suffer from somewhat severe caffeine withdrawal headaches everyday. If I take wood betony before bed, I no longer wake up with withdrawal headaches. It is like a miracle. It improves circulation. Some people claim that wood betony is just as effective at improving circulation as gingko. I take both, but wood betony is much cheaper than good quality gingko extract. I will admit though that although betony is great, gingko provides unique health benefits that are irreplaceable. To sum up, this will stop mania, it will prevent vomiting from nervousness and it is an amazing remedy for headaches. In my experience, this is an herb I actively feel the benefits of everyday.

Wood betony is a great help with the drippy nose and/or edgy feeling that often accompanies season changes.

I used to wonder why I got a cold in late August every year, till my nutritionist pointed out that it wasn't really a cold, it was just my body's reaction to what the weather was doing. Ever since, I've been able to head off those August "colds" by taking wood betony.
