I can't believe the negative review. I am 65 years of age and I have been taking this more than thirty years. It really works, much better than the "Extra-Strength" Gaviscon does and for less money than that. I am not a doctor and I don't think the reviewer who left the scare review is one either. All I can tell you is that I have had extreme gastric reflux for decades and allergies to the "purple pill" have meant 100% reliance on Gaviscon. My gastroenterologist who examined me for erosion caused by my relux was actually amazed given my condition that he did not find any erosion. I told him about the Gavison, showed him the package from my car and he didn't faint or make a horned-devil symbol at the bottle after reading the ingredients. Instead he simply said, "Well something is working for you." Hey, I know this is anecdotal evidence but I would hate to see anyone not try this because of some sort of "expert" opinion review that, just maybe, isn't so expert. It works for me and I have no signs of any sort of problem after decades of use.

THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFIC TO TREATING SYMPTOMS AS A RESULT OF GERD. I do not make any recommendation for the use of Gaviscon by people with ordinary occasional heartburn as a result of overeating, spicy food, and the like.

For heartburn as a result of GERD (chronic acid reflux), the active ingredient magnesium trisilicate is better than the magnesium carbonate found in other products, *including* the "extra strength" and liquid formulations of the Gaviscon brand name. It should be used as a an adjunct to first line GERD therapy with proton-pump inhibitors ("PPI's", including Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, and Protonix) for breakthrough reflux discomfort. For that purpose, Gaviscon has been shown to be effective; other formulations (or completely different OTC heartburn medicines) have not proven to work any better than placebo.

In other words, if you have GERD, this is your only real choice for symptoms—PPI's attack the disease itself, and in general are the more important drugs for GERD, but they take longer, possibly days, before symptom relief.

Again, this is a specific recommendation. If you don't have GERD, other heartburn medicines may (in fact, probably will) work better for you. But if you have GERD that is generally under control with PPI therapy but still have occasional reflux, regular strength Gaviscon tablets (or any alternative generic with the same combination of aluminum hydroxide and magnesium trisilicate) is probably the right choice for you. But check with your doctor to be sure.

I have been using Gaviscon for about twenty years now. In spite of all the "better" drugs on the market, it does the job at night to reduce my reflux problem. The non-minty flavor is nice, too.

I can't seem to find it at local stores any more. I'm glad I can get it on line.
