2007 is sure to be the biggest year in thrash since 1986; a style of metal that would have been written off as dead if it weren't for a few strong '80's hold-overs like Germany's Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction. The thrash revival is in full swing this year with an excellent release by Municipal Waste, several very promising new entrants (Evile, Blood Tsunami, Fueled by Fire), and a few very much anticipated releases (Sodom's re-recording of "In The Sign of Evil" and Demiricous' "Two").

Add to the mix, Dekapitator. Born over a decade ago in the San Francisco bay area, the birthplace of the genre, "Storm Before The Calm" is an impressive thrash standard. Guitarist/vocalist Matt "Hellfiend" Harvey, who you likely won't recognize from his distorted grunting in the gore-grind band Exhumed, even sounds like former Testament/Exodus screamer Steve Souza here.

The production is good and powerful. One thing holds the band back--and the good production makes it very apparent--slow and uneventful time changes. The band sounds amazing when belting out mach-speed rhythms, but nearly every one ends with a simple and sloppy sounding JIG-Jig-jig-pause. The songs are consistent and above average, but there are a few crushing standouts that carry the album: Deathstrike Command and The Scourging. Overall, this is a very good album. I expect great things to come of Dekapitator.

What can I say about this record that hasn't already been said? This right here is a modern thrash masterpiece. Has everything you want in a thrash record. The riffage is insane, the vocals are brutal, and the overall sound of the album is killer.

Personally I find the band Dekapitator in between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Their first album, released in 1999, "We Will Destroy... You Will Obey," obviously left a mark on several up and coming bands that graced our ears with some nicely executed return to form thrash and modern thrash as well. I can't help but wonder, "Did that first album help jumpstart the thrash revival?" May be so, maybe not. However, what we do know is that the band disappeared for 8 years. Dekapitator was missing in action...until 2008.

"The Storm Before the Calm" features many savage and intense riffs. The lead guitar work is handled quite nicely. Some solos on this album are reminiscent of early Metallica with the speed and ferocity of the said delivery of the solos. The clean guitar work sprinkled throughout the album is also a nice throwback to 80s thrash. The drum work I find pretty standard for modern thrash. The drums pretty much keep pace with nice double bass and a few interesting fills.

However, "The Storm Before the Calm" does feature a few too many flaws, thus keeping it from being a modern thrash masterpiece. The throwback to the 80s is obvious and in a small way I do appreciate a band that appreciates the past and nods to the future of their favorite genre (or subgenre) of music. But....there is a line of thrash repetitiveness that can easily be heard. For example, "The Call to Combat" features the EXACT SAME entrance riff that Sodom used in the title track to their 1989 masterpiece, "Agent Orange." Throughout other parts of the album the same example can be given as "I have heard this before somewhere." Matt Harvey does a nice job in the riff department. Unfortunately, he delivers an above mediocre vocal performance.
