After the first few spins Summer of Wolves seems a bit simple, and not particularly varied and fans of The Minor Times' previos work may even notice this seems a bit more reserved. Luckily, repeat listens reveal a deep and rewarding album, with brilliant use of sparse melodies, interesting time signatures, and spot on song-writing that is well worth the time invested.

This album, and The Minor Times' sound in general does harken back to the earlier days of metalcore. bands like deadguy, coalesce, botch, etc. But I think its unfair to call them dated. The sound is a passionate mix of meaty restrained drumming and angular, atonal guitarwork without all the light-as-a-feather triggered double bass clicks and sweep-laden solos. Its barebones, dissonant, caustic, and sharp. The end result, when it works, is a song thats actually interesting all the way through, so you're not just left waiting for the next "cool part."

Fans of the band might notice this album ifeels less immediatly intense. This might be because, while not a major departure, the sound has evolved a bit since making enemies. The songwriting is a lot more subtle, weaving melodies into the songs where you wouldn't expect, evolving riffs slowly over the course of the song, and even experimenting with different kinds of vocals. dont' worry, they're not "experimenting" like The End on their new album, but at times there's a little bit of atonal wailing to compliment the harshness of the screams. think old converge or new harkonen.

Occasionally i did miss the rawness and speed of songs like "the pugilist at work" from the last album, but then moments like the last minute of +++ make me forget all about my conserns.

When it comes to bands I've always been a music first lyrics second kind of guy. If you can't create an interesting platform for your lyrics, I don't care what you have to say--that's just how I feel. So when it comes to judging hardcore bands that have a strong message and aren't so hot in the musical department, well, you know what you can expect.

The Minor Times won't blow anyone away with their musical prowess. That's not to say they're not talented musicians, they are. The issue is that we're currently in the middle of a metalcore movement that focuses on technicality and leads. We're also seeing a renassiance of progressive music in the form of post hardcore groups like Circa Survive, Coheed and Cambria and Minus the Bear. The Minor Times are tame in comparison to most things going on currently.

What can you say about The Minor Times then? Well, the brand of hardcore they play is technical in the sense that they're going a step beyond bands like One Dead Three Wounded but aren't quite as good as a great revival band like Achilles.

These guys would fit in perfectly with old Hatebreed, Poison the Well or Nora. The issue is that we're talking about seven to ten years ago.

Get ready for a massive concussion of post hardcore mayhem!!! These guys assault your eardrums for 41 minutes of unrelenting insanity! "Summer of Wolves" is the perfect follow-up to the near flawless "Making Enemies" release. It is a great shame that the Minor Times have recently announced that they will be parting ways! There was so much more music in these guys, but things haven't been the same since lead guitarist Lou Millinghausen left the band shortly after the recording of "Wolves" due to HIV related complications. The special edition CD will be released in early spring which will include the bonus track "HIV+++" With one listen to this song, you will be hooked on the Minor Times and you will find the disc in your daily rotation for quite some time. The second disc will be one of the final live shows that was recorded with Lou in the everyday lineup, and will include the tracks "The Patient at Rest", "Clinic Visit Wednesdays" "The Brown Eye in the Sky" "The Lou is Very Dead" and they blow the crowd away with the encore version of "I F**K for Money" which unfortunately for Millinghausen didn't turn out so well. Good luck guys, and we will all pray for Lou's T-Cell count to rebound.
