As a kid in the 70s and 80s, my parents had one of these. Not being a coffee drinker, I always thought it was embarrassingly low tech. Now that I'm an adult (though still not a big coffee drinker), I wanted something inexpensive that wouldn't take up a lot of counter space, would be easy to care for and would make decent coffee. After looking at various options, I finally settled on this one, and I'm glad I did. Not only does it work perfectly well, as advertised, it also makes great-tasting coffee (which is more than I can say about the little stovetop percolator I tried before investing in this one). It's also easy to store in my cabinet when not in use.

Two additional notes: The coffee maker calls for size 6 filters, and those are great to have when you're making a full pot. But if you're just making coffee for 2-3 people, I've found size 4 filters work fine, and they're cheaper and easier to come by. I've also found that the coffee filter cone will also work with an insulated carafe I bought separately.

The carafe I received is not what's shown in the picture - for that, I have to dock a star.

What I received last week is an all stainless carafe, inside and out. I also own a glass-lined Melitta (the one in the picture), which came with the Bona Vita drip coffee maker (my wife got me this one, because she drinks regular, and I drink decaf - it's handy to have two separate pots). Because I have both, I'm in a good position to review both.

The all-stainless unit is obviously sturdier - and I suspect that's why they replaced the old model. If enough people complain about shattered pots, they'll eventually change the design. The lid on the all-stainless also has fewer places to gather gunk than the glass-lined one.

That said, I think the stainless one is ever-so-slightly less neutral - it colors the taste a tiny, tiny bit. I also think the glass one keeps the coffee warm maybe 10% longer, but the stainless one is still great.

If you have the glass one (or any glass-lined pot), NEVER put your hand in it. The pressure of your hand pushing on the bottom of the lining can separate it from the rest of the pot. That's bad. Use a sponge-on-a-stick.

They're both great pots. If you care about sturdiness, you'll prefer the all-stainless. If you care about the "perfect" coffee pot and are willing to follow care instructions religiously, you might prefer the glass-lined one.

Either way, Melitta should have come out with a different model# and given us the choice instead of using the same picture (even on the box!) with a clearly different pot. For that, I doc them a star. Otherwise, either one would be worthy of 5 stars for its own strengths (OK, 4.5 for the stainless, since they got lazy with a couple of the details).

I've been brewing coffee manually for many years, using a plastic cone filter holder. I recently switched to this porcelain filter holder, and it really brings out a huge improvement in the taste. The porcelain conducts the heat better and eliminates any kind of plastic taste. With the cap on, the coffee stays warm for about an hour.

Two complaints: the #4 paper filters are a bit too small; you can actually use a #6 filter. Also, there is only one hole in the filter holder, so brewing can be a bit slow sometimes, and when I do try to rush things, there is sometimes clogging which requires my adjusting the filter a bit.

But this porcelain filter holder does produce the best coffee I've ever had at home, a coffeehouse, or a restaurant. With coffee, lo-tech and slow-brewed is always the best way to go.

After my last coffee maker died (the fourth or fifth one in just eight years), I was sick of the electric coffee pot. This very simple set-up was inexpensive and doesn't have any electrical parts to break.

The best thing, though, is that this makes the best coffee ever. Seriously. Here's the method: I grind my beans right before brewing. I pour boiling water over the grounds, just enough to soak them. Then I pour again to fill the filter with water. And I stir with a spoon. Pour and stir, pour and stir, until all the water has gone through. Simple, easy, and amazingly good coffee. It's way better than anything I got from my overpriced electrical machines.

EASY OF USE
I've used the Mellita Coffee System for about 40 years. I find the system more convenient than coffee machines.

> It is easy to brew exactly the amount of coffee you want, and exactly the strength that you want---including adjusting to new roast and grinds. You can even mix caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees if you wish.
> In a way, the Mellita system is more "sanitary". It is easy to forget a used filter in a coffee maker, maybe for weeks if you go on a vacation, and find a fungus garden in there. You can't ignore a used Melitta filter, because it is out in the open. If you forget a used Melitta filter, it and the coffee grinds just dry out. It is also much easier to wash the Melitta components---just a quick rinse under the tap is usually good enough.
>>You can't really clean the plumbing in a "Mr. Coffee" or other coffee maker, and if you don't use your coffee maker regularly, it can get really funky. Most hotel-room coffee makers are unusable unless you run several pots of water through (without making coffee).first. But that still really isn't cleaning.
> If the power goes off, you can still make coffee with a Mellita system if you have a gas stove or a camp stove.

SIZE OPTIONS
The carafes for which the "6 cup" and "10 cup" systems can nominally hold 6 or 10 cups off coffee (filled to the brim), but is less relevant than the "mug-capacity" (1 mug = 1 1/2 cups) of the filters and cones which really counts. My "theoretical maximum" (below) is the amount of water you can conveniently pour through a corresponding filter without clogging it up, etc.
