Callard & Bowser, an English confection company, used to make small licorice toffee candies that were just magnificent. They were about an inch in size, and a dark green-black color. Sometimes they'd be loose in a cellophane bag, other times you could find them stacked up, about 12 to a slim box about the size of a large cigarette case, each in a striped silver and black wrapper. I could not get enough of them. Although Callard & Bowser's licorice is long extinct, this is about the closest to the creamy taste of their licorice. Very tasty. I like it a lot. I hope they don't discontinue it. I will be ordering more.

I have to say I am really glad I read the reviews about this licorice.
Sandy R hit the taste on the nose. I also remembered the Callard & Bowser English company who sold the best licorice I ever had (at that time). My grandmother introduced it to me. The licorice toffee candies came in a silver box with each piece separately covered with striped silver and black wrapping. It also came with a certificate of quality. I fell in love with the taste instantly and bought it when ever I could. I was heartbroken when I found that Callard & Bowser went out of business. This confection is so similar to the original taste I fell in love with that the after my first piece, I was smiling and almost giddy. I found the best licorice taste again! This is the same original taste I fell in love with and in a softer and freshener candy. I have signed up for the subscription delivery and cannot be more happier. Gustaf's Licorice Caramels are made in Holland and you won't be disappointed. WOW! I am in heaven again.

I too was in love with Callard & Brower licorce toffee. Gustaf's toffee wouldn't be bad were it not compared to C&B. It's similar but no where close in terms of flavor. If you want a product that's as close as it gets to Callard and Brower, try Oatfield Irish Licorice Toffee. With Oatfields, while they sometimes can be a little on the hard side, the flavor is dead on. I just got a 4.4 lb bag of Gustaf's, and will probably give the candy away. Very disappointed.

If you can't get any other licorice caramels, these will do. But they have a fake licorice flavor, and there were hard bits in them. Not really very fresh either. I ordered Gustaf's BEFORE I found Cerreta's website. If you want FANTASTIC licorice caramels, call Cerreta Candy in Glendale Arizona-the licorice caramels aren't on their website yet, but they're SO worth it-you can order by phone! And I swear I don't work for them-I visited Arizona in February and had these caramels. Now I'm hooked!

The flavor is good, but there are odd, hard white bits of something in most of the caramels. I am not sure if these were unmixed milk solids, or are some contaminent, of it is is normal. But its very disconcerting. I can't believe I have a contaminated batch, so I assume these are just milk solids. I read the reviews to see if others are experiencing this, and am not sure. Anyway, I'd appreciate hearing if any one knows what they are.

Wow. These are fantastically good. I'm pretty sure that I bought these without knowing it from the general store in Manchester Vermont. They're soft with a good licorice taste and do not stick to dentures. Sadly, that's something I have to think about at my age.

I thought about doing a subscription the next time I order, but time will tell on that, I guess.

I've tried many licorice caramels, and these were pretty disappointing. First off, they instantly turn your mouth a blueish-green color on the first bite. After biting into them, I was disappointed to find that the texture was oddly grainy, and had little chunks of sugar inside. As for taste, they taste overly sweet, and have an overwhelming fake licorice flavor. I'm not sure what to do with the rest of them, as this is a very big bag.
