Do people realize how bitingly smart this show is? I don't think they do, judging by the disparaging comments on how gratuitous, lurid, and tasteless the show is. Guess what? It's a show about sensationalist TABLOIDISM. And the show IS funny: all sharp, bleeding wit--and Lucy Spiller's first instinct is to tear into the first hint of blood in the water.

But what's more amazing is to watch Courtney Cox as the Devil working the room, spinning her wheels and making deals, and then seeing her as the minions and pawns fade away and she's left alone, doubting. Human.

I think that's what this show at its core is about--showing what's human behind the celeb, the humanity behind the monstrous tabloid business, all that seems to be only plastic and spit-shined glamor, deceit and manipulation. The heart of the show lies in Lucy and Don's genuine friendship. Don truly is the "heart and voice" of the show, because it's through him that the show (daringly, honestly, unflinchingly) questions its actions: Why the hell is everyone acting so horribly to each other?

The answer: Because you want them to.

Dirt makes a statement and makes it profoundly--and not by beating you in the head with a soapbox. The show opens up into the hyper-real world that crystallizes the concept of What People Want, this current market of consumers' crushing need for entertainment that deals exclusively in sex, shame, blood, violence, and betrayal: "Who's the fugliest?" "Who's the sluttiest"? "When is that good-girl celeb going to give us a REAL show?" The weekly tabloids, but more than that--this obsession that controls every single aspect of media...and what gives Lucy Spiller, editor of one such "rag" such as Dirt so much *power* in the industry.

I stayed away from this show for far too long because it got slammed by so many critics but when Hulu launched I figured what the heck, it's free so I'll give it a shot and I'm SO GLAD I did.

For all of those who slam it I say: this isn't Masterpiece Theatre kids and it isn't supposed to be.

What it is is a highly enjoyable guilty pleasure and it's fantastic to see Courtney Cox in this as it is clear she is having a blast playing the over the top Lucy Spiller.

i watched the first episode of dirt, and from the beginning i felt it was going to be one of the best shows. great acting, organized and touching storyline, amazing plot and everything that you find interesting in a show you will defiantly find it in 'dirt'. Courtney Cox was a great actor and is one of the best tv series on FX including Nip/Tuck and Damages. it is getting picked up for a second season premiering on the 2nd of march 08. really amazing series recommended to all.

As for the content, this show deals with the tawdry side of life, particularly Hollywood; so we should expect an expose of the immorality that may come from a life in pursuit of hedonism. But artistically, the acting and film-making is great.

I love Courtney Cox but not this show. I haven't even made it past the first disk. It is just odd to me. A tad bit hard to follow. It is great seeing Courtney Cox in a role other than comedy. Eventually I will finish watching all of this season of Dirt but this is a show that you would need to be in the mood for something quite different and something you need to concentrate on to follow. Not a laid-back enjoyable show to relax watching.

I was not sure what to think when I bought this season, but I had heard that it was good from a friend. Courtney Cox is fantastic as a character in charge of a half-dirty tabloid, half-entertainment news type of magazine. She is constantly battling with celebrities to get new "dirt" that no other magazine has, and is very good at playing the politics needed to make it in the business.

There is plenty of sexual inuendo (and more) for those looking for that, and great relationships between characters that are constantly evolving. While the show uses very few celebrities, you will feel that the celeb characters are actually famous because the writing is that good.

The final episode is incredible, though it will leave you hanging a bit. Overall, this is a definite buy recommendation!

Have fun!

okay, so it's trashy, and it lays bare all the tabloid nonsense we like to pretend we despise. but hey, isn't that the point of TV? personally, i find the show completely addictive. this show entertains in rich color and witty dialog. i think the cast is amazing- courtney cox is a cold and compelling star, and don is totally endearing as a co. willa is wonderfully wicked, holt gorgeously indecisive, julia, ah how you'll love to hate her. and hey, if you don't want to watch a show about a tabloid, don't watch it! but if you do, i think you'll agree you're hooked after one episode. it's just good entertainment!

Dirt the first season is a very good DVD set. All four discs are first rate. The writing is creative and fresh; the acting is first rate, especially the character Don. While I have never much cared for the work of Courtney Cox, in this series she does her very best work as middle-aged Lucy and nails the part.

I could nit pick some very unimportant points that could be improved upon as this is a cable series not a movie production, but over all this is one of the best series out there. This is definitely a dark topic for adult or mature audiences, but it is very well done from top to bottom.

The action in this series and the actions of the actors are all fast paced and are all very believable as we get a view of the sordidly dark underbelly of the so-called progress and liberal Hollywood life styles of stars, reporters, and those that support their actions by buying these publications.
